SUMMARY
Finished in 735 Astral Silver with an immaculate Black Cloth interior, this superbly presented 230E was been owned by one family fotr almost 29 years, and has covered a mere 48, 100 miles. Originally supplied by County Garage Cheltenham to a Gloucestershire farmer, as his wife didn’t like going to the races in a Land Rover! The car has been stored inside from new and was only used for occasional trips out up until the original owners passing in 2007.
It was then passed in to his widow and registered in her name, having covered just over 20, 000 mile, and at that point had been serviced regularly by the supplying Mercedes dealer, however she rarely used it, and the car spent most of the ensuing 7 years kept in the garage. Eventually it was revived by the daughter and son in law, who used the car regularly between 2015 and 2018, covering almost 25, 000 miles in that time; during this period, it was properly looked after by MB Centre in Nottingham, which maintained the Mercedes Benz service history. In reality the daughter and son-in-law’s use of the vehicle should be viewed in a very positive light, as it almost certainly shook down and rectified any issues that would have arisen whilst it was in storage. You also have to bear in mind that by the very nature of the ownership and use of this vehicle, there are inevitably some large gaps between services, but as I tell all my customers, you simply can’t have a vehicle of this age with such a low mileage, without at least some prolonged period of inactivity.
In October 2018 the car was sold to a Classic Car Enthusiast, and serial W124 owner, by George Beck Ltd, for £7500 which hopefully will give you some idea as to the quality of this car. The new owner continued to keep the car garaged, only using it for high days and holidays, among that was a near 1000 miles tour of Scotland in September 2019, where in true W124 style, it performed faultlessly. However due to the arrival of a baby in December 2019, he reluctantly decided to sell the car, which is why the car found its way to MTSV (Andrew, is a very good customer of mine and has previously bought several cars from me.)
This car has clearly stood the test of time and maintains so many of its original features that most examples have lost. For example, it has never been fitted with a radio or speakers and the original factory wiring for a Becker head unit remains untouched. It is fitted with New Avon Year tyres all round; these will only be its third set, as the previous set, although having good treaded had perished.
The bodywork is in excellent condition, with only minor patina and the exposed sills of this Pre Sacco-Kit model are perfect, in their original 7129 Galanite Grey colour and have never been welded. The underside is totally fresh, the brake lines are all original and in perfect condition – this car really does stand up to any scrutiny.
The interior is equally impressive and is virtually as new, and even still has that “new Mercedes smell” about it; a smell that you’ll instantly recognise if you were lucky enough to have driven (or been driven in) one of these great cars when they were new. There’s absolutely no wear to the cloth seats, carpets or headliner. It also has a set of matching Mercedes Benz Ribbed Carpet over-mats, which look hardly used.
On the road this W124 is a delight: light, lively and crisp, it rides and handles significantly nicer than a six-cylinder model, feeling much less ponderous in bends. The M102 2. 3 litre engine runs perfectly, is extremely smooth and quiet, provides ample low down torque yet still delivers good fuel economy. I’ve always maintained out of all the W124 range, the saloon provides the most rewarding driving experience, due to its super rigid body..
With four power windows, a power sunroof, door exit lights, ABS and an outside temperature gauge, this 230E reminds of what a luxury car used to be. Impeccable build, using the finest quality material together with supremely good mechanical and ergonomic design are the core values of a true Mercedes Benz. Its simplicity and untouched originality are so refreshing in a world where gadgets are often confused for quality, and make this rather special W124 stands out from the crowd as well, but in a good way.
I’ve always maintained these late 80’s, early 90’s (more specifically 88-91) W124’s were the best built, and these very late pre-Sacco paneled W124’s were the pinnacle, when it comes to sheer quality and outright robustness. They’re old enough to be a true classic, simple enough to be easy to work on, yet reliable enough to use daily if required and will easily keep up (and in some cases pass) modern traffic With that in mind, it’s no wonder that the W124 has been voted at the most useable classic year on year. Also, this car being over 30 years old, will be attractive to buyers from Ireland, where it qualifies for very cheap road tax, now it’s over 30 years old.
My original plan when I acquired this car at the beginning of the year, was to have both sides painted, and retail it as a near perfect example, (and ready to show) for between £7995-£8495, however with the current situation, and notwithstanding the fact that it’s very highly presentable as it is, I’ve elected to sell it as it came to me, and also to keep the price down. If it’s any reassurance, I’ve been involved with these cars for going on 20 years now, and are often told I have high standards, and I’d certainly be happy to own/ drive this car, just as it is.
I’ve also been asked a couple of times if the car is all in original paint. This is a question that always makes me smile to myself. I usually reply by asking how long they’ve lived in their house, and if it’s a long time, say over 10 years, I ask them how many times they've painted their front door and exterior woodwork in that time. The answer is invariably multiple times. With that in mind it would be a small miracle for a car of 31 years old not to have had any paint, unless it’s been stored in a vacuum, and this one is no different, paint like anything else ages, and cars do pick up marks whether it be in storage or in use.
So, as far as I know it’s had the bonnet painted due to storage marks, and the driver’s wing painted due to a garage mechanic carelessly scratching it while fitting new suspension springs, both these jobs have been done well and to a high standard. It’s probably had other bits and bats over the years too, but it’s certainly not been involved in any accidents, or had any corrosion repairs, and all the panels are the originals. The main thing is the car is mechanically superb and structurally exceptional; as I’ve said above, these early pre-Sacco W124’s are built from very high quality metal, which is far superior than it is on the later cars.
I’m happy to provide more pictures or info of any particular area, so please just ask. I think this 230E is a bargain at £5995; the last owner paid £7500 it in 2018, so bearing in mind W124's are still steadily appreciating, hopefully that will provide potential buyers with some reassurance as to its condition.
Finally price on this one is fixed at £5950, No Offers. You will not find a better example in terms of provenance, condition and history for the money.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the majority of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website at - details above
Any other questions, please feel free to contact me via the details on my website. I'm a firstly and foremostly a true car enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.
Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
Thanks for reading my advert!
