SUMMARY
An absolutely stunning example of the what I think is the pinnacle of the production run of the W124 Coupe; produced before standards started to slip with the advent of the 1993 on facelift cars, and all the inherent problems they brought with them (engine wiring looms, more complex engine electrics and random corrosion etc.)
This 300CE started life as a demonstrator vehicle for Lancaster-Europa Sheffield and is believed to have been one of their director’s cars; as such, it was specified with a host of very expensive extras that would have pushed its price tag when new to well over to the £40, 000 mark. It was then subsequently sold through Mercedes’ Signature Used car scheme, for £29, 950 on 30th March 1993 to a "lady of considerable means" who owned the car for almost nineteen years, and who continued with main dealer servicing well into the car's life. During her ownership, and also in subsequent years the vehicle has always been garaged, which is confirmed by the fact that the instrument needles are still bright orange; cars which are kept outside usually have needles that are faded to yellow, bleached by the sun. As a result the car is in absolutely immaculate condition, and I very much you'll find many, if any, better.
I've now sold this beautiful car four times since first acquiring it back in 2012, and what surprises me is that it hasn’t deteriorated at all in that time, thanks to each of its enthusiast owners having afforded it the same level of care it has become accustomed to throughout its life. All without exception have added to its extensive service history, and between mid 2014 and December 2018, the car resided near Madrid, Spain, which has clearly paid dividends; that together with the fact that the car that has always been garaged, and has never been used in poor weather over the last eight years at least, means the condition of the underside is consummate with a much younger vehicle, infact while it was being serviced last week, there was a 2016 VW Golf on the next ramp, and this underside of this Mercedes was in far better condition than that a four year old Golf.
Everything works as it should, and needless to say the car drives exactly like it looks putting many modern prestige cars to shame. It's one of the very best C124's I've come across in the time I've been involved with these cars, and is an absolute joy, exuding that legendary W124 solid feel, without a squeak or rattle to disturb the serene ride. It still even has that "new" look and feel to it, which just can't be replicated, once its gone.
One big advantage of this car is it was specified, from new, with the factory (Behr) air-conditioning system, which in 2016 was overhauled and converted to use the new R134a refrigerant. This is rare on a pre facelift W124, as you'll find most had retro fitted (usually by main dealers) Diavia Air-conditioning systems, which are now difficult to source spares for, and are also tricky to work on too.
So, if you're on the lookout for one of these most elegant of Coupes, I don't think even the most discerning will be disappointed with this one. Examples like this are getting ever rarer, and this one ticks all the boxes in terms of condition, mileage, specification and colour combination. Everyone who's seen this car instantly comments on just how beautiful it is. Values of the C124 are also appreciating rapidly at the moment, and the best examples like this are appreciating the most, and with interest rates as they are, it's probably better than having money in the bank..
Finally, the car has also just undergone a major service, which included transmission oil and filter change, differential oil change and an Air-conditioning service and re-gas. It also now has a full 12 months MOT, which it passed with absolutely no advisories, so is ready to go and be enjoyed by the new owner, without any further expenditure.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the majority of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don't just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won't notice…I just couldn't do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
