ABOUT THE VAUXHALL ASTRA SXI:
With the Mark 4 Astra range, Vauxhall waved goodbye to dodgy build quality, mediocre dynamics and pudgy styling…
– RAC
The Astra G was the fourth generation Astra from Vauxhall, replacing the ‘Astra F’ that lasted from 1991 to 1998. Looking back now, the Astra F is a hideously ugly shape that looks like some sort of Soviet Era design, it’s hard to believe that British public bought so many of them!
From a design and engineering point of view, the Astra G was a huge leap forward for Vauxhall. Gone were the days when buyers would buy simply on the strength of the price and ‘Britishness’ of the brand – by the late 1990s Ford had shown the world what middle England motoring should look like, and the Focus changed the automotive landscape. The Astra G might not have had the dynamic looks of the Focus, but as a package it had a lot to offer.
Available with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, as with all classic cars it’s the ‘warm’ and ‘hot’ versions that appear first on the classic car radar. We’ve highlighted how classic car values work in the context of the Hot Hatch in this detailed blog.
This Vauxhall Astra is rather exceptional, as it shows just 5, 000 miles from new. The owner loved and adored this car, it was his pride and joy until…. a company car arrived. Faced with the ‘sell it or keep it’ dilemma, he opted for the latter. This Astra was kept in storage whilst the company car took on the role of active duty. As a result, the Astra is now presented in virtually ‘as new’ condition.
Often with classic cars a description might say something like ‘never been welded’ but with this one, we aren’t even sure if its seen rain, let alone rust!
