Tipo 116 was named ‘Alfetta’ for incorporating the weight distribution and rear suspension characteristics of the Grand Prix Formula One multiple winner Alfetta 158/ 159. Chief constituents included placing the clutch and transmission towards the rear of the vehicle and fitting a De Dion tube at the rear suspension. The lowered and evenly distributed weight supported by a non-independent rear suspension provided for superior handling. Power was initially decided to be delivered by a 1. 8 lt unit and was soon substituted by 1. 6lt and 2. 0 lt versions. However, it wasn't until the Alfa 6-derived 2. 5lt V6 plant was used that the sportier Gran Touring charisma of the GTV was unveiled. The fuel delivery was redesigned to incorporate the Bosch L Jetronic system for reliable and enhanced power control throughout the revs. The ensuing GTV6 2. 5 was introduced in 1980 to be further upgraded in 1983 with numerous interior and exterior cosmetic features that remained till the end of production in 1986. Concurrently, the GTV6 2. 5 setup was tested and soon established in motorsports winning several championships, including both the European and British Touring Car Championships.
The GTV6 2. 5 offered here was produced in 1983 to feature all upgrades and finished in most commendable combination of Grizio Nube Metallizzato over Beige Vellutto. Unlike most GTV6 2. 5, this one was preserved instead of driven for it reflecting a cornerstone in Alfa Romeo production history. After 33 years and only 11019 km on the odometer, the GTV6 was recommissioned by a marque specialist in Zeist, Holland. Even though its mileage history could not be verified, its authenticity was certified in 2017 by both FIA and FIVA and commended for retaining all factory and dealer-fitted options. In the spring of 2020 the GTV6 was treated with professional mechanical and cosmetic maintenance to preserve its astoundingly original condition. It is now offered with 11833 km on the odometer with stellar cosmetics for museum display or private collection purposes.
