Often used by Kings and adorned with jewels and ornamentation, the Sceptre is a symbol of power and never carried by an ordinary citizen. In automotive terms, Humber, the creator of the Humber Sceptre, could trace its origins back to 1887 and was best known as the maker of high-quality, conservative motor cars for Britain’s upper-middle class.

Introduced in 1963, the Sceptre was a luxury version of its Hillman Super Minx stablemate. It featured a unique roof, new glass as well as upper and rear body work not shared with other models in the range.

Powered by an 80bhp version of 1. 6 litre Minx power plant, it featured disc front brakes, windscreen washers, reversing lamp, rev counter and a full range of instruments to match the luxurious interior trims.

The result was a more powerful and sporty character that appealed to a totally new audience of drivers and positioned at the top of the range within the Rootes Automotive Star of brands including Hillman, Singer, Sunbeam, Karrier, Commer and Talbot.

This Neals Motors delivered example first came to Classic Throttle Shop’s attention when it was released from the Bruce Terry collection some 10 years ago, subsequently finding its way to a local owner in the eastern suburbs, he would drive it daily to the office and would sit side-by-side in his corporate carpark alongside colleagues Porsche and Aston Martin’s – just because he could.

Finished in Duo-Tone Quartz Blue Metallic over Moonstone with matching Azure interior, this example has continued to be well maintained and well cared for throughout its life. Still presented in original condition with lovely external patina and beautiful matching interior, it is credit to the previous ownership and one of the best examples of a classic Humber Sceptre you would find today.

As the original brochure would say, “…a superbly equipped sports saloon…” this is an excellent entry into classic car ownership and perfect club car for weekends and special events.
