SUMMARY
Supplied by Western Garages Edinburgh, this high spec W124 300TE-24 has been with the same owners for almost 28 years spending most of its life in central London, with stints in Switzerland and Edinburgh.
My original intention with this car was to bring it up to my usual standards and retail it for between £12-14K, however time and space constraints now dictate this isn’t possible in the foreseeable future, so to avoid it standing around, I’ve taken the reluctant decision to sell it as it is. I would have loved to do the work on this car, and in a sense I almost feel guilty passing it on, but commercial realities dictate this is currently my best course of action.
I've covered the issues with the bodywork, by means of the photos on this page, but just to say there are no corrosion issues with this car, in fact it’s one of the best preserved and incredibly original examples I’ve come across. I did originally intend to have both sides and the bonnet painted, but on reflection that would maybe have been overkill, and in reality you could actually get away with painting much less, which would also have the net effect of preserving the originality; as any classic car enthusiast knows, once the originality has gone, you can never get it back.
Incidentally, the underside and lack of corrosion is this car's party piece, in fact the MOT tester said I must be mad "jobbing out" a car this good; it’s very hard to believe it’s 30 years old.
So here are the other areas that I think need attention:
* Cruise control inoperative (probably due to the stalk as its lost its springiness)
* Aircon will require at least a regas – it’s on the old (now outlawed) R12 refrigerant, so will need filling with RS24
* Small mark on n/ s/ r door card
* Holes drilled in side of centre console for a phone cradle
* Tailgate struts are weak
* Bonnet insulation missing (I have a replacement)
* Grille insert has a chip in it
* Nearside headlamp wiper motor doesn't work
* There is a lot of oil on the bottom of the engine, so there’s probably a leak that will need attention. The car had lots of gaskets replaced before I got it, so it could possibly be residual oil.
* The car has had a new ignition barrel fitted, so there's a different key for ignition and doors
* Remnants of the old car phone kit need to be removed
* Original "Western Edinburgh" number plates past their best
The car drives superbly and is seriously quick, even by modern car standards. There's very few S124's left in this kind of condition, and even less of the now sought after 300TE-24; excepting the AMG versions, this early 220+BHP M104 engined S124 was the most powerful variant of the “stock” range. Incidentally, these earlier version of the M104 Straight Six, don’t suffer with the tedious Bio-degradable wiring loom found on the later cars, fitted with the Bosch HFM Injection System.
So, in summary, a spend of around £2-3K and a bit of effort will make this car pretty much perfect, and, as I said, will yield a vehicle worth in the order of £12-14K, which based on past trends should continue to appreciate in the coming years. In the 15 years MTSV has now been trading, I’ve based my reputation on trying to get the vehicles I retail as good as they possibly can be, but one thing I have learned is that you simply can’t make something from nothing; you have to start with the right car in the first place. Rust can kill these cars, and fabrication is expensive, and never as good as the original metal. The great thing about this car is it requires no fabrication whatsoever, so is essentially a very straightforward exercise to bring it to a show standard.
Finally, the car will be advertised for a month. If by the end of December it hasn’t sold, I will withdraw it from sale and embark on the work required, re-advertising in Spring/ Summer 2021 as a fully prepared retail vehicle for a considerably higher price.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the majority of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website at - details above
Any other questions, please feel free to contact me via the details on my website. I'm a firstly and foremostly a true car enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.
Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
Thanks for reading my advert!
