An incredible, one-owner W123 finished in Champagne Gold metallic with tan velour upholstery.
The W123 has become a worldwide symbol of Mercedes durability and quality. Elegant, timeless styling combined with truly thorough engineering led these to be loved the world over.
Yet, perhaps because of their longevity, they are extremely hard to find in excellent original condition. In this country in particular, corrosion has meant most surviving cars are not viable for restoration.
This 230E Automatic was sold new in London and remained there throughout its life. It was well-specified with alloy wheels, electric windows, electric sunroof and rare velour upholstery. Its only owner used the car regularly until around 2000 when he moved abroad. The car was then stored in dry garage until we purchased it last year from the owner’s son.
Having spent its life in salt-free London then dry stored the car was in incredible, original condition with zero corrosion and a perfect interior.
We have thoroughly recommissioned the car, including a cylinder head rebuild with a new gasket and timing chain (as a precaution), the brakes and steering box have been refurbished, the tyres and exhaust replaced along with everything else it required.
The body is superb. The sills, jacking points and floors are all original paint and completely rust free. Even the brake and fuel lines underneath are original and corrosion free. The period-perfect Champagne paintwork presents beautifully.
The velour interior had seat covers fitted from new, which we have just removed. As a result we have never seen original velour upholstery in such perfect condition. The rest of the interior is similarly superb with excellent woodwork and carpets. Original stereo, overmats and period 80s car phone.
Drives beautifully on the road; the 230E auto is often considered to be the sweet spot of the range with eager performance, smoothness and relative simplicity.
In summary, a true ‘survivor’ W123 preserved in exceptional rust-free condition, thoroughly recommissioned and ready for the next owner to enjoy. All for a fraction of the cost of correctly restoring an average example.
