MG RV8 GT – Five Year Build/ Ultimate MG GT
Rover re-entered the sports roadster market with the RV8 in 1992. The 3. 9 litre V8 delivered 185BHP to the rear wheels through a five speed gearbox giving impressive performance – 0 to 60mph in under six seconds and a top speed of around 135mph.
Although not manufactured by Rover the RV8 GT is an option that would have produce one of the ultimate GT packages – an utterly stunning combination of pace and grace. Maidstone Classic Sportscars have hand built around four RV8 GT’s and it was this that inspired our example.
The car started life in 1976 as a 1800cc MGB GT and was purchased by the last owner in 1987. She was used for around 10 years but with a growing family the car was put into the back of the garage under a cover. Sometime later the owners’ husband, a time served engineer, decided that he wanted to create the car that he had always wanted but could not buy - an RV8 GT. The result is a testament to his knowledge, skill, deep pockets, and commitment to his dream.

On the road the car is a revelation with superb performance/ handling, modern bespoke leather/ wood interior with electric windows etc. and an utterly addictive V8 soundtrack to match.
This is certainly the car that Rover should have built. The cost of parts exceeds £20k based on 2002 prices and we estimate that to build this car today would require a budget in excess of £40k.
