The 1950’s were an iconic period for American car design. Styles evolved in every model year, body sizes increased and tail fins grew. Bigger was still considered to be better. In 1958, the tail fins had grown to near megalomanic proportions and styling was more extravagant than ever before. This model year Cadillac is a monument of its era and symbolises American popular culture.
Purchased in central California, the car had sat outside for the better part of two decades. Broken glass and a genuine bullet hole are silent witnesses of a period of neglect and decay. Last serviced in 1993 at 28. 232 mls, current mileage sits at 29. 409. From here on the car can be taken down on two different paths: either restore it to perfection or turn it into a patina preserved driver.
Presented in the leftovers of its factory original Alamo Beige paint, the body shows a lot of surface rust, but is remarkably solid. Some rust through was found in the front floor board, on the right hand door panel, in the spare wheel well and battery box. The chassis shows no signs of rust damage.
The engine turns by hand and on its starter motor. All mechanical systems would need to be rebuilt and/ or serviced. Two fuel tanks are included: a rusty old one and a newer replacement. The spare wheel, jack and tools are missing.
Inside the car's interior it is a sorry mess. Hence, a complete reupholstery job is required before any sane person would consider taking a seat. The windscreen and front and rear side glass are damaged and need to be replaced.
Revive this motorised version of the American dream and drive it like the king of the road.
