SUMMARY

Originally supplied by Road Range, Liverpool, but sold new (through MB Dealer stock) by Charles Sidney Mercedes of Bradford, this is actually a special order vehicle as the facelift W140 was never officially offered in Pearl Blue; a colour only available on the first series of the W140. This is confirmed by the fact that the colour code of 348U appears as an option code on the data card.

I bought this vehicle in May 2020 from the family of a gentleman who’d owned it for almost 18 years. In all that time the car had covered less than 3000 miles, as it was reserved solely for use on high days and holidays. However the car has sat idle in the later years of his ownership, as the gentleman had sadly fallen into poor health. As such the vehicle required quite some re-commissioning, and although this was a very good, low mileage example to start with, as anyone who knows these cars will tell you, the W140 is a complex beast (for its time) and is a car that really doesn’t like to be stood idle. The upshot of this was that to get this car to a standard I was happy with, I’ve spent almost £4000 in its preparation, in addition to the countless hours I spent working on it.

In and among that spend was the replacement of the front wings; although they weren’t too bad, and could have been repaired, the corrosion would have ultimately returned, and as this was the only corrosion on the vehicle, I felt it only right to replace them. At the same time I also had the bonnet and boot lid painted, due to marks picked up whilst in storage. The job was carried out by a very well respected bodyshop and the finish is indistinguishable from the factory finish, so as a result the car looks amazing, and is virtually flawless. Other work included a major service, including ATF and filter, replacing of all discs and pad, replacing the AC condenser and pressure switch, as well as countless other jobs too numerous to mention. The car was also fitted with copy 8-Hole alloys, a popular upgrade in the 90’s, usually actioned by dealerships, however I’m not a big fan of these copy wheels, albeit it they were of good quality, and despite most not being able to tell the difference between these copies and the originals, I can, and I don’t think they look quite right, so I sourced five original genuine Mercedes W140 Specific 8-hole alloys, had them refurbished by TWS, Leeds and fitted new tyres too, which I think has further added to the vehicles appearance; the factory wheel have a sharper definition that perfectly compliment the lines of the car.

This W140 also has quite a rare specification too, which I think makes the car more desirable in terms of reliability. It hasn't got all the options that in my experience tend to be unreliable, that is there's no soft close, no parking sensors and no memory / electric seats. Although the car can hardly be described as Spartan, I think it has everything it needs, but nothing it doesn't.

As with any well maintained W140, it's absolutely superb; 47, 000 miles is generally regarded as hardly run in (as they say on eBay) and is absolutely nothing for one of these Autobahn Stormers; these cars, once the transport of choice of Plutocrats, captains of industry and Dictators are capable of six figure mileages with ease, so as you can imagine, at such a low mileage, it drives and feels almost like a new car. Also, even though this is the smallest engined variant of the W140, don’t listen to those who say it’s underpowered; you usually find they’ve never driven an S280 and are simply parroting what they’ve read or heard. I’ve driven ever variant of the W140, and find the S280 as refined as the rest of the range; its quiet, more than adequately powerful and reasonably economical too, with around the 30mpg mark achievable on a run, and mid to low twenties around town. Considering this car weighs in at almost 2 tons, that’s quite respectable,

Many now concede the W140 is finally starting to realise its true potential as a bona-fida Classic, and I think that's down to being the last "proper" premium Mercedes, and the model that nearly bankrupted Mercedes as its development costs were enormous, and hence it was partly the reason why the company was sadly forced to circum to global economic pressures and cut their production costs, to compete with its rivals, something Mercedes initially struggled to do. In my opinion, the later S-Classes', although very nice, can’t match the teutonic build of the W140, and the W126 before it, and although today’s S-Classes are packed with loads of advanced electronic gizmos that give a "whiff" of a quality product, that core build quality and feel just isn't there anymore.

MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES

MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!

My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the majority of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too

MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.

THE MTSV DIFFERENCE

Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website at - details above

Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.

Thanks for reading my advert!
