EXTERIOR
Effortlessly cool the E9 3. 0 CSL is a perfectly proportioned piece of design that remains timeless, with its sweeping lines flowing uninterrupted thanks to its stunning pillarless construction. Restored by marque specialists in 1996 the owner of the car opted to have the car re-sprayed in a vibrant shade of Golf Yellow which perfectly suits the stunning shape of the homologation special and presents very well, with nothing more than a few minor imperfections to note.
Contrasting the bright yellow finish sits the trademark black CSL stripe, period black number plates, black wheel centres and lashings of chrome around the body. Having covered minimal mileage since the extensive restoration work overall condition of the car is very good – presenting with a deep shine the bodywork appears solid throughout, showing no bubbling or signs of corrosion in the usual areas.
INTERIOR
The interior of the BMW E9 coupe is like none other, beautifully laid out with lashings of wood trim it is a wonderful place to be. Slide into the Scheel seats and it’s obvious this is a special car. The seats are in good condition with no tears and the wood trim remains in good condition with no major marks or wear other than the wooden gearknob which is starting to show some minor lacquer peel.
Looking to the centre tunnel shows how advanced the car was for its time, with electric window controls for front and rear and a Getrag 4-Speed manual gearbox, whilst in the dashboard a simple, period style AM/ FM radio provides a basic level of entertainment.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Fitted with a 3003cc engine and 4-Speed Getrag gearbox the appeal of the 3. 0 CSL becomes apparent the moment the key turns and the straight-6 rumbles into life, settling to a smooth but purposeful idle.
Producing just over 200bhp the 6-cylinder engine is more than powerful enough to make the featherweight CSL feel fast; weighting in at just over 1, 100kg the E9 manages 0-60mph in just 6. 9 seconds and goes onto a top speed of 137mph and transforms the smooth idle note the a glorious straight-6 symphony as the revs build to a 6, 100 rpm crescendo.
Rebuilt during the cars extensive restoration the matching numbers engine and gearbox appear to be in excellent order, having covered just 7k miles since the work was completed.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The period 14 inch BMW wheels present well, free from any signs of curbing or fading and are wrapped in period correct Michellin XWX tyres at each corner.
HISTORY FILE
First registered on 11/ 12/ 72 as confirmed by a BMW Heritage Certificate, this E9 3. 0 CSL was 1 of just 500 UK RHD “City Pack” cars produced and originally left the factory in Ceylon Gold metallic. History for the car is available from 1980 onwards and tracks the life and ownership of the vehicle, outlining much of the maintenance in cars early life and listing just 5 owners in total.
Service and parts invoices go on til around 1996, when the car was taken to marque specialists by the 2nd owner for a restoration at 81, 455 miles. During this time the car was resprayed in period correct shade of Golf Yellow (070) and treated to a full overhaul including rust treatment, interior work and an overhaul of the suspension and drivetrain, with invoices totalling in excess of £15k.
From this point the CSL was sold to the 3rd owner who kept the car for a few years before selling it the 4th owner in 2000, who held onto the car for 18 years and covered less than 7k miles in this time, keeping the car stored in a carcoon for large periods of his ownership. MOT certificates date back to 1984 and help to verify the cars low mileage, as does the recorded log of ownership and correspondence with the owners club who have kept tabs on the car over the years.
In more recent times the car was sent for sent for maintenance work in November 2020, with an invoice outlining service work, new exhaust mid and rear mufflers, original radio fitment and some electronic work which totalled in excess of £2k.
Also present with the car is a duplicate owners handbook and some original booklets, comprehensive history file, BMW heritage certificate and V5.
