Based on a 1969 model year BSA Rocket 3, this Triumph Hurricane replica is inspired by Craig Vetter’s 1969 prototype.
The new range of BSA/ Triumph 750cc 3 cylinder motorcycles were not well received in the USA and Vetter was commissioned to customise the outdated looking Brit to appeal more to American tastes, to make it ‘sleeker and more balanced’. The result was a machine with sweeping glass-fibre fairing finished in bright ‘Aztec red’ with yellow stripes. The exhaust exited right in an unusual triple pipe formation.
But the project didn’t see the light of day until 1972/ 73, when it was launched as the Triumph X-75 Hurricane. Only 1, 154 Hurricanes were built of which only 40 were sold in the UK market.
Originally imported to the UK in January 2016, this BSA A75R (shipped in September 1968 for the ’69 model year) was built to Prototype specification (badged as a BSA rather than a Triumph) by specialist Bill Thompson in the UK. It was then part of a private collection for 4 years.
It has covered just 97 miles since the build and has just had a complete recommission and service.
The exclusivity of the Hurricane makes them hard to find, so this evocation makes a great alternative choice.
