At the origin of the cyclecar movement in France, the finance law of 30 July 1920 provided for a reduced tax rate for vehicles that did not exceed 2 seats, 350 kg and whose displacement was within 1100cc. Salmson was one of the many manufacturers to embark on this market segment, but certainly one of those which had the most success in competition, notably thanks to the brilliant 1100cc engine designed by engineer Emile Petit, powering the AL and VAL.
This car, chassis 8624 rolled out of the Salmson factory in 1924 with a very desirable two-seater sports body. With this in mind, its previous owner rebuilt the car, completed in 2008, from a batch of parts he had gathered. The body was rebuilt in steel on a wooden structure, as at the time, with a single door on the passenger side. Only the wings have not been redone, an absence which underlines the sporting vocation of the machine. The engine, type AL3 has been redone and works well, and it is mated to a 3-speed gearbox. The axle housing has been remanufactured in aluminum and the trumpets and the period inspection hatch have been refitted. Additionally, an electric fan and an alternator have been adapted. The aluminium dashboard includes the essential tachometer, a clock and a useful water temperature gauge. This charming cyclecar has covered barely 1200 km since its resurrection. The VAL 3 has the advantage of being more efficient than many of its competitors of the time. It is an excellent opportunity to set foot in the world of cyclecars and to go racing at the legendary Montlhéry autodrome, for example on the occasion of the incomparable "Vintage Montlhéry Revival".
