SUMMARY
Finished in 735 Astral Silver with an immaculate 068 Grey Quartz Cloth interior, this superbly presented 230E has essentially had just three owners. Supplied by Majestic Mercedes of Bournemouth, to a Justice of the Peace on 2nd January 1990, and who kept the car almost 12 years. It was subsequently sold to a Hampshire garage owner, who kept this car almost 16 years, registering it first to his business and latterly as his personal vehicle. Finally in 2018, it was sold to a member of the Mercedes club who spent a great deal of time bringing the vehicle to a very high standard.
I’ve always maintained the sweet spot for W124’s is the period from 1987 to 1990, when it’s widely accepted that build quality was at its absolute pinnacle. This car is an absolute testament to that, and has clearly stood the test of time; in fact it’s very difficult to believe this car is actually 31 years old. All the usual W124’s areas of concern are perfect, with none of the corrosion that seems to afflict these cars, particularly the last of the line post 1993 facelift cars.
The interior is equally impressive and is virtually as new, and even still has that “new Mercedes smell” about it; a smell that you’ll instantly recognise if, like me, you were lucky enough to have driven (or been driven in) one of these great cars when they were new. There’s absolutely no wear to the cloth seats, carpets or headliner. It also has a set of almost new matching Ribbed Carpet over-mats too, to protect the virtually untouched carpets underneath them.
On the road this car is a true delight; light, lively and crisp, I think the 230E rides and handles significantly better than the heavier six-cylinder model, feeling much less ponderous in bends. The M102 2. 3 litre (Duplex timing chain) engine runs perfectly, is extremely smooth and quiet, provides ample low down torque yet still delivers good fuel economy. I’ve always maintained out of all the W124 range, the saloon provides the most rewarding driving experience, due to its super rigid body.
With four power windows, a power sunroof, door exit lights, ABS, Cruise Control, rear headrests, front armrest and an outside temperature gauge, this 230E reminds of what a luxury car used to be. Impeccable build, using the finest quality material together with supremely good mechanical and ergonomic design were the core values of a true Mercedes Benz during this golden era. Its simplicity and untouched originality are so refreshing in a world where gadgets and shiny pieces of trim are often confused for quality, and make this rather special W124 stand out from the crowd as well, but in a good way.
As I’ve previously mentioned, these late 80’s, early 90’s (more specifically 88-91) W124’s were the best built, and these early Sacco paneled W124’s were at that pinnacle, when it comes to sheer quality and outright robustness. They’re old enough to be a true classic, simple enough to be easy to work on, yet reliable and safe enough to use daily if required and will easily keep up (and in some cases pass) modern traffic With that in mind, it’s no wonder that the W124 has been repeatedly voted at the most usable classic year on year. Also, this car being over 30 years old, will be particularly attractive to buyers from Ireland, where it qualifies for very cheap road tax, now it’s over 30 years old.
I’ve also been asked a couple of times if the car is all in original paint. This is a question that always makes me smile to myself. I usually reply by asking how long they’ve lived in their house, and if it’s a significant period, say over 10 years, I ask them how many times they've painted their front door and exterior woodwork in that time. The answer is invariably multiple times. With that in mind it would be a small miracle for a car of 31 years old not to have had any paint, unless it’s been stored in a vacuum, and this one is no different; paint like anything else ages, and cars do pick up marks whether it be in storage or in use. What paint has been done, has been done well and to a very high standard, and it’s certainly not been involved in any accidents, or had any corrosion repairs, with all the panels being the originals.
So in summary, I think this is one of the nicest W124 available, in incredible condition and one that comes with a very highly detailed service history demonstrating this vehicle has benefitted from a very, very high standard of maintenance right from day one, to the present day. W124’s like this are getting very difficult to find these days; as values have appreciated, many less scrupulous sellers are trying to pass off substandard vehicles as something they’re not, leaving buyers disappointed. I’m very confident this car will impress even the most demanding buyer, as it ticks all right boxes as far as W124's are concerned.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the majority of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website at - details above
Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
