HISTORY/ PROVENANCE
This KZ1300 was owned by John Wyatt, who passed sadly away recently. John was a very well known and respected motorcycle restorer. He wrote the Bay View book “Original Honda CB750”, and was the owner of Rising Sun Restorations.
John had a collection of bikes, most of which were unrestored. As the availability of NOS parts became more of an issue, he preferred to find low mileage original examples with no pattern parts on them and then improve them to the best of his ability. Johns saying was “They’re only original once pal!”
John spent a lot of time finding the right bike and found this one in 2017 in Montana eventually. He spoke to the owner at length, who had bought it new and the only change he had made away from standard was to fit gas shocks, but he’d kept the originals, which came with the bike and are now fitted.
MILEAGE
When the bike arrived, it had an 80mph speedo fitted. This was at a point in America when bikes were limited to 80mph. That speedo was showing only 1, 409 miles and was the main reason John bought it. the original speedo will be included in the sale. John then changed it for a used speedo that went up to 160mph. An NOS one would have looked out of place. Add John’s mileage to the original speedo and total miles are less than 2, 500!!
SERVICE, MAINTENANCE
When it arrived from the States it was given a full service, new tyres fitted and then Mot’d at 18, 603 miles on the replacement speedo. It now has 19, 516 miles, so under 1, 000 miles in John’s ownership. He Mot’d it and rode it a few hundred miles every year, If you check the MOT history you will see the latest V5C change is dated 29/ 3/ 2021. This is because it had been taxed incorrectly as a bicycle so DVLA re-taxed it correctly as a historic vehicle and re-issued the V5C.
Any major work was done at Rising Sun Restoration’s workshop, the following has been done :- Carbs stripped and re-built with new diaphragms, brakes stripped and re-built, fork oil changed, radiator taken off and cleaned, exhausts taken off, engine cleaned and we assume the headlight was changed to UK specification.
Out of all the bikes John owned, this was the one he spent most time tinkering with. It was invariably the one on the bench at his house. He went through it from front to back. His ethos was that it should remain unrestored and not be torn down, but if it could be improved by replacing worn parts with NOS items, then that’s what he did. If you look closely at the pictures you will see, there are NOS switches, levers, fuel tap, rubbers, plug caps, rubber carb holders, brake light switch, hoses, indicator lenses, bolts, washers, cables, clips, guides etc. etc. we can’t be more definitive because I can’t ask him.
Dave Marsden at Z Power advised John to fit a new cam chain tensioner modification as they were a weak point back in the day, it is believed to be from a from a Kawasaki ZZR
CONDITION
Please note this is an un-restored bike, and as such there is evidence of very limited wear. John wouldn’t re-paint it because that would be restoring, so it wears a very low number of the very tiniest of marks.
You really have to look hard, I am just being extra picky : ( : )
GENERAL INFO
The bike was Mot’d regularly (you can check online), even though it is exempt. The current MOT expired in March 2021 but will come with a new 12 month Mot for the next lucky owner.
The Kawasaki KZ1300 / Z1300 Motorcycle has been kept in heated garage with a trickle charger attached and under a bike cover, The condition of this Fabulous classic machine can only be described as unbelievable.
