After a prolonged period of long-term dry storage this 1975 450 SL underwent considerable renovation work in 2016-17 encompassing new brake callipers, discs and pads, brake pipes, a new fuel pump and fuel filter, fresh engine, gearbox, and rear axle oil, new ignition leads, new rear copper fuel pipes and rubber fuel hoses (premium specification) and complete replacement of the rear exhaust/ silencer section. In addition the car received a brake fluid change and two coolant flushes, as well as the obligatory set of new tyres. During the overhaul the wheels were treated to professional powder-coating, which set off that unmistakeable profile magnificently.
Another plus point is that all cavities and sills, the chassis, and the spaces between inner and outer panels have now been injected with Waxoyl for improved longevity. The car also sports a new mohair convertible roof. As the photos show, the car's Old English White bodywork is in immaculate condition, and the engine and engine bay are absolutely spotless.
In long term ownership for twenty-seven years between 1989 and 2016, the car is accompanied by an extensive history file detailing how well maintained it has been. The car has covered a not particularly excessive 66, 000 miles, especially not for a 4. 5-litre V8 powerhouse delivering 225HP.
The automatic gearbox naturally delivers a beautiful smooth gearchange and the engine roars into action when called for without hesitating for an instant. A really quite superlative drive.
These Mercedes coupes are one of the most highly prized classic cars of all time, and especially in this condition, are certain to increase in value for many years to come.
This particular iteration of the highly-respected SL family remained in production until 1980.
