Citroen CX Prestige Series 1, originally supplied to Lord Lambton, the Earl of Durham in 1978, this is the holy grail of early Citroen CX’s with only 5 remaining according to the ‘how many left’ website. Stainless steel bumpers, revolving drum instruments backlit in yellowy orange, finger tip indicators and wiper buttons and of course, hydropnuematic suspension - all very wacky. This is a very left field, iconic French classic.
The car is well known to the CCC featuring in various articles. Lord Lambton was a hereditary peer and minister in Ted Heath's government involved in a national scandal in the early 1970’s, which I suggest you Google if interested. The car spent time between the family castle in Durham and a pied a terre in Chelsea. I have copies of the logbooks showing it's ownership back to initial registration.
A large file of receipts with the car which has been looked after by Tony Weston classic Citroen specialist near Gloucester since I purchased the car in 2015. In that time, it has had a new clutch and clutch plate, regular servicing etc. A previous owner spent around £10k on the vehicle. The history shows that the vehicle was also owned by Centreville Citroen specialist who used it as a wedding car. They also converted it from automatic to manual which suits the car.
Finished in gloss black (noir) with tan leather and in lovely condition. Always garaged during my ownership and kept in a Carcoon over winter. The previous owner kept it inside in a storage facility with his other classics.
The car sits, rises, and drives exactly how it should. The 2. 3 litre fuel injection petrol engine is in rude health and perfectly capable of long distance cruising at the appropriate speed limit - it is no slouch. No rot or grot. I have the car fitted with period correct stainless steel hubcaps but the alloy wheels are also included along with various parts including the correct Prestige chrome bonnet trims which I haven’t fitted.
Usual Prestige features including electric windows all round and electric mirrors (1978!) rear passenger side sunvisors and rear integrated retractable sun blinds. Correct Mitchelin Energy tyres. I bought the car in Dublin and drove it back to South Herefordshire. Would happily drive it to the south of France.
Tax and MOT exempt although I still elect to have it’d MOT’d and this runs to October 2022. Classic car insurance is about £100 per annum for me. Mileage is 98, 000 although this will increase as I am using it more regularly in dry weather.
There is a specialist auction house in Paris where these occasionally come up for sale. They tend to sell at around 30k Euros. They were a rare car on the road in the UK from new given the high forecourt price and obviously, much rarer nowadays.
Always attracts a crowd wherever you go.
