Although production racing regulations stipulated that stock frames be retained, in endurance racing there were no such restrictions, and several teams and individuals favouring the big Laverda triples went down the spaceframe route in a bid to both reduce weight and improve the handling. In the UK, frame-makers Harris and Spondon offered spaceframe chassis kits for the Laverda triples, but the first such frame had been built in Italy for the works team in 1975.
In more recent times the factory-type chassis kit has been marketed by Piero Laverda's Laverda Corse Group, and one of theirs has been used in the machine offered here, which was built circa 2007 by Mr Raymond Shone of Cheshire and is a close-as-you-can-get copy of the original works bike (see original purchase paperwork on file). The engine is said to be a 180º-crankshaft unit fitted by Ray Shone with a SFC 1000 cylinder head. The engine was subsequently rebuilt by Paul Curtis, a specialist well known within Laverda circles.
The Laverda is believed to have been used on two occasions in the Bol d'Or Classic by Team Lavergnac Rufus Racing and at Spa Francorchamps in 2011 when it finished 40th (photographs on file). Ralph from Motalia Ltd (Norwich) went on to sell the machine for Ray Shone to a Bury St Edmunds based enthusiast who then used it on the road. It appears that the Laverda was then sold to dealer M&S Motorcycles of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The current vendor purchased the Laverda from M&S in 2017, since when a considerable sum has been spent on restoring the machine to its present fine condition (see bills totalling circa £1, 400 on file). Notable features include the aforementioned SFC big-valve cylinder head and 36mm carburettors. Paraded at the Isle of Man Classic TT in 2019 (the last year it ran), the machine has been kept on display in the vendor's kitchen and is fully serviced and ready to enjoy. Offered with a set of large fairings; V5C document; a Spa 2011 results sheet; and the aforementioned bills and paperwork.
