General information:
The early 1960s marked a period of profound changes for the Mercedes-Benz model lines, ushered in with the new "W11" Sedan introduced for 1961. Styled by the fast-rising designer Paul Bracq and featuring top quality materials and construction, the new W11's body design was highly influential and the basic styling served as a template for Stuttgart's premium coupes and convertibles for the next decade.
The high-end body design of the 220SEb Coupé and Cabriolet has been further refined and stripped of retrograde tail fins with a more attractive and modern fender line, and the concept culminated in the new 300SE Coupé and Cabriolet, which debuted to critical acclaim at the 32nd Geneva Motor Show in March 1962. As a new premium two-door four-seat model from Mercedes-Benz, the 300SE raised the bar for performance, style and exclusivity.
Designated "W112" to further differentiate them from the rest of the Mercedes-Benz model lines, the 300SE Coupé and Cabriolet had additional but tasteful finishes, including a full-length chrome strip nestled into the character line along each side. , plus brightly trimmed wheel arches. Interiors were given extra beautifully finished wooden accents.
The Bosch M 189 IV inline 6-cylinder fuel-injected light-alloy engine initially produced 160 hp, increased to 170 hp in 1964. The 300SE's performance varied with the rear axle ratio chosen, including Autobahn-worthy top speeds from 110 to 120 mph. Standard features included a 4-speed automatic transmission, power steering, self-levelling pneumatic front and rear suspension and advanced dual-circuit brakes with discs all around. Costing nearly $13, 000 new and approaching the price of a modern Bentley, the 300SE Coupe and Cabriolet were produced in limited numbers with elaborate craftsmanship and meticulous workmanship from 1962 to 1967, with only 3, 127 built, including 2, 419 coupes. Despite low production, these cars have been widely used in movies and TV shows since new, and they continue to be sought after for their uncanny blend of quality, refinement, understated elegance and renowned driving dynamics.
