SUMMARY
This a car I know very well indeed having first sold back in April 2017 to a Mercedes Club member, however by his own admission he's not in the first flush of youth and asked me to find a similar car, but in Elegance specification, as his partner found the Sport suspension a little on the firm side. I then in 2018, sold this very special car to a Mercedes enthusiast who has a small collection of Mercedes, and who has owned the car almost four years, and although covering very few miles, has spent a small fortune on the vehicle, making it as near to perfect as can be reasonable expected. He only used the car in summer, and always ran it on premium fuel.
This is one of the best and highest specification W202 C-Class I've seen, and also a very rare Sport model, featuring the superb M112 V6 engine, and is also fitted with the even rarer optional factory AMG handling upgrade; this is a combination seldom seen on the W202, due to it's extremely high cost when new (this car cost over £42, 000 in 1998!). It’s also an impressively quick, but usable car, and is essentially an AMG car in everything but name, especially with the chassis option. It's not widely known, but the C36 AMG was actually a modified C280, as Mercedes took C280 Sport models (as required) directly from the production line, transporting them to the AMG factory, where they were modified. It was a different case with the C43 though, which was the first dedicated factory built AMG car made, after Mercedes decided to bring the AMG operation in house. The comparison I'm making here is that if you were to find an W202 C36 (which is essentially a modified C280 Sport) in the same condition to this one, with a similar mileage and provenance, you'd be looking at paying around many times what I'm asking for this car. Also, having said that, a C36 would have the potentially problematic M104 straight six, with all its potential pitfalls (head gasket, wiring looms, throttle bodies etc) whereas this car is fitted with the much more reliable M112 V6 engine, which I think is one of Mercedes best engines for quite some years.
So, in summary a highly attractive, quality performance saloon, which could be used daily, if required, but is probably best saved for high days and holidays, given its near perfect condition. It's also a little more subtle than the official AMG models, and has the added benefit of very reasonable insurance and running costs.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
