Descrizione

Chassis number: A64 | Registration number: BUE 743 | Date of Registration: 01/ 09/ 1937

Chassis # A64 is one of only sixteen narrow chassis 1500cc pre-war HRG’s and this presents a rare opportunity to purchase one of these lively and attractive sports cars featuring the well know Meadows 4ED engine.

In the last few years the car has been painstakingly stripped to bare metal and repainted in dark green, with black wheels and satin black chassis and front axle. The mechanical aspect has required little work following a 2017/ 18 engine rebuild by Blue Dimond Services (Formerly Keith Pointing), with many spares supplied by Blakeney Motorsport. These included but were not limited to Arrow Crank and Carrillo rods, Omega +40 pistons and a lightweight flywheel. New stubs axles were fitted, replacing cracked items!

The weather equipment comprises a black hood, tonneau and sidescreens.

The accompanying history files and photographs are comprehensive and absorbing.

Eligibility
Following their inception in October 1935, HRG’s were soon being used in competition in many motoring disciplines. Events included MCC Trials, Monte Carlo Rally, Le Mans and Tourist Trophy plus the Donnington 12 hour sports car race. FIA, HTP and FIVA papers would provide a whole world of motoring international events for which the car is eligible.

BUE 743 early days
First owner William (Bill) Perkins kept the car until the early 1950’s and pre-war Bill campaigned it In trials on a regular basis. In the early post-war years the Meadows engine was changed for a BMW 328 unit, smuggled into the country. Soon after the war ended. BUE 743 resumed motor sport, entering speed competitions and taking top honours in the sports car class. BUE 743 was well known as the HRG-BMW. In September 1954, the Brighton speed trails were Bill’s last event and he came 2nd in class to an AC Ace owned K. N. Rudd.

A copy of the continuation logbook mentions three more owners before being purchased in 1970 in a part restored condition by K. R Holmes, the car by then minus the BMW engine. Restoration started in 1978 and photographs in the history files cover various aspects of the work done: new ash timbers, mainly under the doors where the timbers are exposed to water from the road, and a Meadows 4ED engine was fitted having been completely rebuilt by Densham Motorsport. Restoration was completed in 1994, where upon speed competition resumed. The first outing was at BOC Prescott (Long Course) in May 1994, and the car was soon continuing her trialing exploits as in the pre-war days.
