1951 HRG 1500cc – Chassis W211, Engine C1334S
Originally registered on 4th August 1951 as PPL370, this HRG features coachwork by St Leonard’s Engineering, which was completed in July 1951.
The first owner was Alfred Temple of Surrey, and originally finished in cream with a red interior. At this time HRG gave two engine option a 1100cc, and 1500cc SOHC by Singer, this car I offer features the more desirable 1500cc engine.
Historic Competition & Ownership:
By the mid-1970s, PPL370 was owned by Tony White in Somerset, who actively competed the car in trials and hill climbs. Notably, he won first in class in the 1978 MCC Lands End Trial and secured the Stanley Cup in 1989. The next custodian, Jay Hall, who was an experienced hand with Lotus and BRM’s V16 project. He undertook a full mechanical rebuild and cosmetic refurbishment during the mid-1990s, including new interior trim. Comprehensive notes from this period are available. Following this, PPL370 joined the collection of Russ Swift of Layburn, a professional driver for events and films, marking it the third HRG in his garage.
For the past nine years, the car has been based in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey back to her home soil some would say! maintained in excellent condition. Equipment & Eligibility: The sale includes full wet weather gear, tonneau, side screens, and a fairly new hood.
There is a good reason that HRG’s are popular sporting choice, especially in 1500cc guise, with strong body, and informative chassis and steering, and smooth gearbox and strong braking. Idea for touring or just for the sake of driving.
Enthusiasts will appreciate the HRG Association, an active group with owner events throughout the year, and the car’s eligibility for VSCC post-war competition.
