Designed partly by the American racing driver Carroll Shelby and the idea founded by Jack Brabham, the Sunbeam Tiger was a Rootes Group car with a large American V8 shoehorned under the bonnet. It gave 164bhp and pushed the car to 60mph in just over eight seconds. The cars were built by Jensen in West Bromwich. The Mk. 1 featured a Ford 4. 3 V8 and they were used at Le Mans and various rallies with some success. Just 320 Tigers are currently registered on UK roads.
With its current owner since 2002, this example has been used to go to shows and as a weekend toy. The car reportedly was restored in the 1980s according to the owner’s club and lived most of the 1990s in Cornwall. It has covered less than 10, 000 miles since 2006 with a fresh engine reportedly fitted in 2015 along with an upgraded aluminium radiator and electric fan. Body work restoration was carried out in 2005 but the car could do with further work to the driver’s door and sills. Its original colour was blue, but it has since been painted red. The black leather interior is in great condition and also features a Motalita Steering wheel (original included). The owner reports that the car drives well with engine and transmission behaving as they should.
The sale includes a current V5 document, a small amount of history as well as a second set of keys and some spares. Overall a useable car that needs a little fettling to improve it and some chrome work done.
Estimate: £25, 000 – 28, 000
