SUMMARY
This car is simply gorgeous; the colour combination of Flint Grey with Tan Leather really sets it apart from the others in more “boring” combinations. The almost pearlescent Flint Grey bodywork shows off the achingly beautiful lines of the W219 CLS Coupe, a car that I think is sure to become a classic; it has to be one of the most striking automotive designs for years. I also like that fact it’s a bit “mad” too in that such a big car has just four seats, which underlines that this is luxury transport.
As the W219 CLS is based on the more ubiquitous W211, parts are in plentiful supply and reasonable priced. This car is also right at the “sweet spot” of W219 production; it was registered in September 2008 so firstly it doesn’t have the problematic SBC (Servotronic Braking System) that plagued earlier cars, however as its a MY2009 facelift model, it enjoys all the many improvement and benefits which that brought, but is just (by about two months) old enough not to require a potentially troublesome and power sapping DPF. It also has the well proven OM642 3. 0V6 Diesel engine; beware petrol versions have the M272/ M273 engines that can suffer with the potentially catastrophic Balance Shaft Sprocket issue (just Google it!)
The drive of this car is just sublime, there’s no other word for it, the power and its delivery is just effortless, yet brutal, but it still manages very impressive fuel economy; think of it as a frugal iron fist in a velvet glove! The ride is cosseting, smooth and quiet, with obviously no unwanted noises etc, etc. The interior is typical of Mercedes and is a very nice place to be. This is a high specification car so has many features like Bluetooth, Lingatronic voice control, Heated Seats, Electric Seats etc etc It also has a very rare electric Glass Sunroof (or is that a Moonroof?)
I’ve gone a bit over the top in the preparation of this car and spent more than I intended, but every penny has been worth it, and the car shouldn’t want anything spending on it, above fuel and insurance in the near future. I concede you will find cheaper CLS’s, but I doubt you’ll find many as beautiful, and most will undoubtedly require the same work I’ve carried out on this one.
So if you’re looking for something that still looks like the £40K vehicle it once was, is well sorted and won’t break the bank with its fuel consumption, this could be for you. I could just sit and look at this cars for hours, it just looks fantastic from every angle.
