The Peugeot 404 was officially presented in April 1960, in the production center of Sochaux, to arrive on the international market shortly after.
Line designed by Pininfarina, the 404 met with great success, with just under 3 million units sold and numerous victories also at a sporting level.
The line of the Italian designer included thin pillars, smooth side lines, rear fins and chrome that wink a bit at the lines of American cars.
As per the tradition of the house of the Lion, the sedan was joined by the cabriolet (also with hard-top) and coupé versions, produced at the Pininfarina factories, but with mechanics assembled in Sochaux.
In addition to the classic colors, it was also produced in bright orange, dove gray and lagoon blue, decidedly unusual colors until then.
With the 404, the new 1618 cm³ XC engine, powered by a carburetor, made its debut, which delivered a maximum power of 72 HP at 5400 rpm.
The Peugeot 404 was available in carburettor, injection and diesel versions.
The introduction of the Hydrovac brake booster with drum brakes was innovative.
The Peugeot 404 not only represented a model of great commercial success, but also obtained important results in international competitions, such as in the East African Safari, which was a land of conquest, with successes in 1963, 1966, 1967 and reported very prestigious victories also in South America, winning the Argentine Grand Prix in 1963 and 1965.
The 404 Coupè version ended its production in 1968 with 6, 837 examples.
