SUMMARY
Originally supplied by Mercedes of Hertford, and pretty much looked after by them all its life under one of their Service Plans, this car has lived in a smart suburb of North London, the last owner of the vehicle kept it for over 12 years, and used it for trips back Greece to see is family, so many of the relatively low 109K miles were covered on Continental motorways.
I stumbled across KB55 FLM during one of my daily trawls of the Autotrader website. It was being sold at a used car lot in Luton; basically it was the right car in the wrong place. However as is the way with buying cars from “Trade Sale” places like this, it had a few issues to say the least, in fact it went into Limp mode within ten minutes of buying it, however knowing these cars as I do, I knew exactly what was causing the problem (The Turbo Actuator) so wasn’t too concerned; the main attraction of this vehicle for me was its condition and provenance, two factors that can’t be put back regardless of how much you spend. Another big advantage of this car, is it’s one of the few W164 ML’s that just fall into the cheaper tax bracket, which is a very big attraction these days; if this car had been registered a couple of months later, the road tax, after the recent April 2023 increase, would be a whacking £675pa, however because its was registered on 19th January 2006, road fund licence is a much easier to swallow £395pa.
So, over the last five months, I’ve put this vehicle back on the right track. Over and above all the usual things I do to my cars (servicing , replacing trim, wheels, tyres etc), everything that can go wrong with the W164 ML has now been addressed, these are as follows:
* Turbo Actuator – These fail causing the vehicle to go into limp mode. Mercedes will tell you you have to buy a whole new Turbo, but the Actuators can be bought separately.
* Oil Cooler Seals – The part its self is only costs around £10, but its over 8 hours of labour to do the job as the Cooler is situated deep in the “V” of the engine, so lots of components have to be removed to access it. In the process lots of gaskets were changed and the inlet system cleaned of the carbon deposits that build up over the years.
* Transmission Electroplate (TCU) – This controls the gearbox, and sensors on the unit fail cause the vehicle to go into “Trans Safe Mode” and stick in gear. Rather than just have the offending sensor replaced (it was the Vehicle Speed Sensor in this Case aka VGS) I decided to source a fully reconditioned unit, so basically all sensors have been replaced and software update.
All this hasn’t come cheap, and the total spend has been around £3100, and that’s at my cost, for a normal retail customer for the work I've done, it would have cost well in excess of £5K . However this means that whoever buys this will take ownership of an extremely well sorted W164, and one with superb bodywork too. As I’ve previously mentioned, this car has spent the majority of its life in the milder London climate, and I don’t think it’s ever seen any off road use, so the underside, unlike many of these cars is in fantastic condition, and doesn’t look like the hull of the Titanic.
So, if you’re looking for a superb, very well sorted W164, that falls into the realistic road tax bracket, I dont think you'll go far wrong with this one. Although I’m in the business of selling cars, I admit I’ll be a little sad to see this one go, as I’ve got my heart and soul (and a lot if money) invested in it. I’m writing this just after returning from a 20 mile “shake down” test drive, and there’s not many W164’s ML that drive as well as this one, and I’m now proud to put my name to it.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
