The Birmingham Small Arms factory was established in the Small Heath area of Birmingham 1861 and as the name suggests manufactured weapons. Around the turn of the century they started making bicycles and progressed onto motorcycles a few years later. BSA went on to be one of the world's largest producers of motorcycles up until its demise in the early 1970s. This authentically restored Model D is thought to have been one of the Works bikes entered into the 1913 Senior TT, ridden by Kenneth Holden. Originally scheduled to ride a 2 speed model, problems in practice meant he had to revert to his single-speed practice bike for the race but unfortunately, a crash at Kirk Bradden caused his early retirement. As is often the case with race machines there is no definitive proof of this story, but the bike is supplied with numerous copies of contemporary magazine race reports. It seems to have reappeared in the 1970s being used in various VMCC and Pioneer runs around the UK and Europe, picking up over 250 awards and taking part in Anglo-Dutch events on 8 occasions winning best overall performance twice. In 1983 it gained a Silver medal in the re-enactment of the 1910 ISDT run from Land?s End to John o? Groats, a journey of over 1000 miles as well as winning the VMCC South Western championship 20 times and completing in many Pioneer Runs to Brighton. Now fitted with a rubber ?V? belt drive for reliability it comes supplied with a spare front pulley to alter the gearing and various copies of technical information, old MOTs and a current V5C. The bike has been stored for a number of years in a private collection so will need recommissioning before use.
