EXTERIOR
This stunning Mk1 GTi presents in excellent condition throughout with the Alpine White paintwork looking really sharp thanks to a swirl-free shine and uniform colour across every panel. The black side stripes are a perfect accompaniment and both bumpers are without any damage or wear; all the trims, badges, lights, and rubbers are also in first-rate condition, this GTI looks clean with coil-overs giving off a lowered aesthetic and rarer P-slot wheels fitted, all the part of making a hot hatch look aggressive.
With only a few minor blemishes evidencing the car’s age this is an excellent example of the legendary Mk1 Golf GTI.
INTERIOR
Opening the door of the Golf you feel as if you have been transported back to the 80’s with that familiar VW fit, finish and cabin scent. The retro feel extends to an original Pioneer cassette/ radio with a fantastic factory option graphic equalizer. Both front seats are in excellent condition, still feeling as firm and supportive as the day they left the factory with excellent intergity. The rear seats look unused and remain in perfect condition.
Both the black vinyl roof lining and deep pile carpets are also unmarked whilst the carpets themselves are protected in the foot-wells with a pair of VW over-mats.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
This iconic car is in tremendous mechanical order and really boasts what Mk1 GTi ownership should be about – marvellous fun! The engine produces 112bhp at 5800rpm and 109lbs. ft of torque at 3500rpm, enough to sprint to 60mph in 8. 2 seconds and achieve 114mph. Renowned for sheer driving pleasure, this Mk1 GTi does not disappoint; it is easy to understand how this car started the hot hatch phenomenon.
The clutch is light and easy to modulate with the 5 speed ‘box precise and simply a joy to use.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The rare 15 inch Ronal Pirelli P-slot alloy wheels, made famous by the Campaign model, are a welcome addition here and fit the arches perfectly. Tyres were replaced recently and show plenty of tread all round.
The braking system performs as it should – pulling up this lightweight hatch with a minimum of fuss.
HISTORY FILE
A 1983 car that covered a majority of it’s mileage in the early years, this Mk1 has a fantastic history file with MOT’s and service invoices dating back 25 years.
The current enthusiast owner has worked over the last 10 years to ensure the car shows and performs as it should, with only occasional use on high days and holidays. A full window out respray was carried out in 2011 whilst myriad parts were replaced and installed by marque specialist John Austin of Colchester over the next 5 years. More recently the cambelt kit was replaced in 2021, a new battery a year later and plugs, oil and filter replaced in March of 2023. Dry stored during the intervening periods, the car sits in lovely condition ready for it’s next owner to use and enjoy.
A chronological folder full of paperwork illustrates work completed over the years also features photographs of the respray and a VW Heritage Golf parts catalogue.
