Following the famine of new designs during WW2, the motorcycling public was heartened by the trickle of all-new machines announced in 1945-48. Some were bound for obscurity, but the most outstanding was Philip Vincent?s astonishing tour-de-force, the Series B Rapide. The sports v-twin class had virtually died out after 1939 when the last of the A-Series twins left the factory and other makers closed down for the war. The appearance of this full-blooded, revolutionary machine gave it an instant fame among motorcyclists. However, comparatively little of all of the Vincent production of this period found its way to British shops. ?Export or Die? was the slogan and while the home population often had to settle for an ex-WD bike, many Vincents went overseas. No fewer than 431 of the Rapides found their way to Argentina, one of the factory?s major customers.
This unusual machine is one that has made it back to these shores. Invoiced on 9th February 1949, under works no. 20531, according to the Vincent records, to Cimic in Buenos Aires, FSK 861 has remained in pretty standard condition. Re-imported in 1989, the Rapide was returned to the road briefly in 1992, since when it has remained in store.
In motor cycle terms ?le pur sang?, in other words Philip Vincent?s original concept, Series B machines to original specification, like this one, have become rather rare, so many having been updated over the years to Series C appearance with ?Girdraulic? forks. Here, apart from some extra chrome, little appears to have changed, a full set of ?HRD? caps testifying to the machine?s unmodified nature. Complete with its V5, old MOT, VOC dating certificate and a copy of the works build sheet, the Vincent will amply reward a careful rebuild by its new owner.
