SUMMARY

The Crossfire was probably one of the better products to come out of the Daimler-Chrysler colaboration, in hindsight, it seems what on the whole was bad for Mercedes, was actually very good for Chrysler. Originally bought as a company car, then bought by the same lady owner after she she’d left the company. She said when she originally ordered it, she’d test driven an SLK, but said the Crossfire drove better. She kept the car right up to March 2022, when I bought it. As it hadn’t been used at all during lockdown, I needed to do quite a bit of re-commissioning work, as well as bringing the service history up to date, as well as fixing a few issues. The final bill for that little lot, (excluding my time) came to around £1900, but the car drives as it should now, and everything works, infact it goes like the clappers!

I’ve always been somewhat fascinated by the Crossfire and thinking behind the concept, which is probably why until now I haven’t really wanted (or tried) to sell it until now. I think, at least, it was one of the better products to come out of the Daimler-Chrysler collaboration and is essentially a mechanical clone of the R170 SLK320 wearing a different suit; that said Chrysler do manage to squeeze a few more BHP from the Mercedes M112 V6, making this is a seriously quick car with a Top Speed of 155mph and a 0-60 time of 5. 9 seconds. As a Mercedes specialist, I like to think I know the R170 SLK inside out, and having spent quite a bit of time working on this Crossfire, I can confirm that it’s mechanically identical to the R170, so much so that many of the parts I’ve bought for it have come straight from my local Mercedes main dealership – you can buy them from a Chrysler dealership, but believe it or not, it’s cheaper buying exactly the same parts from Mercedes!

The car is in superb condition with none of the rusty arches that seem to plaque these cars, and there’s very few age related marks too. It’s also free of accident damage and comes complete with a completely clear HPI report. Interior is also in fantastic condition, in fact it’s a very nice place to be. The seats are extremely comfortable and supportive. There no rips, tears etc, and only minimal wear to the driver’s seat commensurate with its low mileage and light use. Everything works as it should and the Air-conditioning is ice cold as its recent been refurbished.

Mechanically, as previous alluded to, being a Mercedes is superb. As they say on a well known auction site, there are “no Knocks & Bangs” (that term always makes me smile, as I write it.) This is a seriously quick car, so it pulls like the proverbial train. Power delivery is smooth and seemingly endless; I’m not brave enough to find out where it does end!

Also worth mentioning is this car falls into the cheaper road tax band of £395. Beware of Crossfires registered after 23rd March 2006; they attract an annual road tax cost of nearly £700! This car is also London ULEZ compliant too.

So if you’re after a fast car that’s just a bit different, looks fantastic, but comes with the reassurance that its Mercedes underpinnings are well proven, durable and superbly engineered, look no further. I’m fairly sure the Crossfire will become a classic in the not too distant future, if it’s only for the fact that it’s one of the few cars with larger diameter wheels on the back, than on the front!

THE MTSV DIFFERENCE

Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website at - details above
