By the late 1920s, Cadillac was known for producing big, powerful, and prestigious automobiles. In 1929 the highly revered 341B was unveiled and for the 1931 V8 lineup, Cadillac debuted the Model 355. Producing 95 horsepower, this 5. 8 liter V8 was still fitted with high compression heads, and offered in a wide variety of body styles.

The Fleetwood convertible coupe was instantly recognizable by its elegant rear opening front doors. With a shortened wheelbase, it has a sportier look than its predecessor, yet still retained the long elegant running boards. 1931 design changes also included the replacement of the hood louvers with vent doors. These vent doors were shared from the V12 and V16 models, and greatly enhance the look of the powerful V8.

This Fleetwood convertible coupe is believed to be originally ordered on August 27, 1930, and was shipped to New Mexico Motor Corp in Albuquerque, New Mexico on October, 3, 1930. Having underwent a full restoration, this Cadillac was sold in the RM Amelia Island Auction in 2008. It later passed through the hands of Peter Klutt’s Legendary Motorcar Company, and acquired by its current collector owner.

During those years (2009 and 2010), a complete engine rebuild was undertaken by a well known Connecticut prewar restorer. The entire engine was rebuilt with new pistons and engine mounts, while the drive train and braking system were gone over. The job totaled just over $29, 000 USD, and all receipts are all included in the cars file, which is extensive.

Also in 2010, new black wool carpets with red piping were made, as were two leather side panels totaling just under $1, 000 USD. At the same time, the cars tan top was replaced by its current beautifully fitted black top, at a cost of $3, 250 USD. The top still remains in excellent condition, and chromed top mechanisms show nicely against the black bow coverings.

For several years largely unused, the car remained in climate controlled storage as part of a high caliber collection. In 2017, this Cadillac was awakened from storage and “woken up”. The fuel system was completely gone through, which included removing and steam cleaning the gas tank. Pin hole leaks were found, and the proper repairs were undertaken. To aid in drivability, the fuel pump that was added was replaced, and regulator also replaced and repositioned. Choke and throttle rods were adjusted, while road testing began. All four shocks were found to be leaking, and subsequently send out to be rebuilt. Shock link brackets and u bolts were inspected and or repaired. The total recommissioning came to be $10, 147. 59 USD, and this Cadillac now runs and drives as it should. The engine bay is very tidy, with fresh hoses and a radiator that is in immaculate condition. These Cadillac V8 power plants pull like a freight train, and this example is truly a joy to drive!

This Fleetwood Cadillac will be welcomed at all major Concours, and is an approved full classic with the Classic Car Club of America. With the luxury of roll up windows, this Fleetwood can be enjoyed as an open or closed car, making it an ideal candidate for touring!
