Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1991 the Bentley Continental R continued the revival of the marque which had begun with the turbocharged Bentley Mulsanne and Turbo R models of the 1980s. On its introduction, this stylish touring car, the epitome of luxury and high performance was the most expensive car in the world. It was the first Bentley to feature bodywork not shared with a Rolls-Royce model since the 1965 Bentley S3 Continental. On it?s UK introduction in 1992, the sale price was a staggering £178, 000. The Continental R was widely praised by road testers and journalists for its immense power, pace and superb handling characteristics at high speeds.
Manufactured in 1993, our car, one of just 76 right-hand drive examples built that year has a very low total mileage of approximately 56, 000. It spent it's first four years in Singapore where it was registered early in 1994. The first three services were carried out in Singapore by Malayan Motors. On import into the UK in 1998 the car was sold to a Worcester - based Electrical company. The KMs speedometer was changed to MPH which is why the recorded mileage since that change is lower, at just over 50, 000.
With a kerb weight of almost two and a half tons and a top speed of 152MPH this imposing coupe could reach 60mph from rest in just 6. 6 seconds.
There is a substantial history file with invoices and MOTs to verify the mileage. Since 2006, over £54, 000 has been spent with one London-Based Rolls-Royce and Bentley Specialist who for almost a decade stored, insured, maintained, and valeted the car, regularly taking the car to Heathrow Airport to meet its owner. Clearly the car was used sparingly when in the UK, in some years the owner used it for just a few hundred miles. Since this long-term owner sold the car, it has had two owners, one in Suffolk and the latest, a regular customer of ours in Norfolk, who bought the car in 2020. That same specialist has sold the car to the last three owners and continued to maintain it, last working on the car in March 2022.
