We are grateful to the vendor for the following description:

In current ownership since 1997 (26 years), this fantastically practical car has, in the vendor’s words, ‘been driven and owned by a careful driver’, and occasionally by her sons, when transporting furniture was needed. Although the annual mileage is low the vendor says ‘it has performed brilliantly in long drives on the continent including through deep snow with snow chains in the French and Swiss alps annually for more than 10 years and on such runs has never broken down’. In recent years the driving has been limited to the UK and fewer trips onto the continent. The current owner is now 84 and is skiing less!

Since 2010 the longest journeys have been in the UK, for example, Guildford to Buxton, Guildford to Bristol and to Cambridge. With the additional double child’s seat in the rear, the car can legally, with seat belts, carry seven persons. There is still room for luggage either side of these additional seats.

Compared with more modern Volvos (hybrid and electric) it probably has a much better turning circle, which makes it relatively easy to park. This is also helped by the assisted steering. Although spacious inside, it is narrower on the road than many modern hybrid cars and potentially easier to view traffic and parking spaces through the door mirrors.

During its 27 years with the current owner, the main repairs required have been mostly wear and tear, replacing the oil and transmission fluids. Various components have been replaced over the years including the alternator, springs in the driver’s seat and tyres, exhaust systems, windscreen washers. (full list of all the replacements are in the service records). Changing gears is very easy and with the 5th gear (override) we are told ‘it is still very efficient in mileage’.

According to the vendor, ‘it has also been regularly serviced to pick up any minor faults to keep its performance up to scratch. The main engineering challenge in the last two years has been the unreliability of the speedometer, however, when the battery was replaced in June 2023, the speedometer began to work again. There is a ‘back-up’ speedometer connected, which could be used in case of future speedo issue’. The Volvo has been kept on a driveway through all weathers and still presents well after 30 years and starts easily even when it is snowing.

Compelled to sell due to the impact of the London ULEZ expansion, the vendor would otherwise have continued driving the 740 GL for the foreseeable future ‘because they are so reliable’. The 740 is MOT’d until 27th July, 2024, and is offered with 3 sets of ignition keys (including, glove compartment and 2x petrol cap keys).
