Marketed as "the personal Rolls-Royce", the release of the Silver Shadow marked a pivot for the company - where the Silver Cloud and the even larger Phantom were typically chauffer driven, the company's customers were increasingly driving themselves. With a unitary body and chassis and one of the best suspension designs ever produced (a hydropneumatic system based on Citroen's), the Silver Shadow brought the company into a new era.

The car was a hit, with around 30, 057 made between 1965 and 1980, split between regular and long-wheelbase sedans, a hardtop coupe, and a drophead coupe. The latter two were coachbuilt and eventually split off under the "Corniche" moniker, but maintained the styling and underpinnings of the Silver Shadow. Overall, these cars are fabulous to drive and/ or ride in, and are steadily gaining enthusiast and collector attention, especially as few cars convey an image of wealth as well as a Silver Shadow Drophead Coupe or later Corniche.

The marvellous 1971 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Drophead Coupe by H. J. Mulliner Park Ward presented here comes in special-order paint-to-sample Maroon Amaranto over Beige Connolly leather upholstery with a matching Beige power top and eye-catching Burl Walnut woodwork. This car has known ownership from new, having been originally ordered by luxury automobile dealer/ broker Harry Woodnorth, who specified air conditioning and its distinctive exterior color. Not long after it arrived in the US, the car was sold to Mary Hartline of "Super Circus" fame. Eventually, the car made its way into the collection of a prominent Rolls-Royce enthusiast, where it remained for twenty-five years.

Accompanied with its original owners manual, exchanges between Mr. Woodnorth and the dealer, numerous service records, an original brochure, and two crystal decanters which rest in the passenger door pocket, this Silver Shadow is ready for its next caretaker. We are proud to offer this stunning Rolls-Royce to the most sophisticated collector, investor or enthusiast who appreciates these timeless motorcars.
