Long-term ownership since 1999 to date. Enjoyed and fastidiously maintained.
Still wearing it’s originally assigned registration, this wonderful example of the successful smaller companion to the Silver Ghost was supplied new through Joseph Cockshoot & Co Ltd. The aforementioned were notable coachbuilder agents for Rolls-Royce from 1907 until the end of WWII. Such was the level of craftsmanship by the Manchester based outfit that Rolls-Royce employed the services of Cockshoot to occupy stand space at the London Motor Show from 1911 until 1938. This example is believed to be the only six-light version bodied by Cockshoot’s and is presented in a fetching combination of green and black, with tasteful contrasting red pinstriping.
The opening ‘V’ windscreen is a prominent feature and the car retains a huge amount of originality throughout, such as the interior roof light in the rear passenger compartment adjacent to the smokers hatch. Barker dipping headlights feature also. Much documentation (including chassis card) further highlights the provenance and originality of this example.
Supplied in November 1927 to Mr Albert Hartley as a rare owner/ driver 4-door saloon (lacking the then-customary division between the driver and rear passengers), this example also features a totally unobtrusive, yet unique and original, easily removable nearside centre-post (and passenger seat that can tip forwards). This was believed to be to facilitate access for the disabled Mr Hartley who kept the car until 1932 when it passed to a new custodian, namely Dr A K Miller whereby it was relocated from Lancashire to Cheshire. A further 28 years later the car passed to D E Balfour in 1960 and was later exported to the USA by Mr Richard Lisenby of Washington in 1979, only to return in the late 1980’s when reimported by Mr David Rowe and purchased by Mr Robert James of Llanfyllin. Having undergone a partial (top-end) engine rebuild at this time which comprised a re-bore including new pistons, water pump overhaul and coil re-wind. The bottom-end was observed to need no work at that time. In March 1991 it was sold by Sotheby’s to Orchid Cars (Mr Andrew Booth) and from 1991 until 1999 by Mr Clive Sherwood. Since February 1999 the car has been in the same ownership having been sold to Mr M G Galliers by Mr Jeremy Wade.
Significant works were carried out in 2000 which included a total re-wire (92 hours labour documented for this alone). A further 502 hours were recorded for stripping of the motorcar, repairs, painting and building back up. The wheels were all re-spoked at this time and headlamps restored with nickel plating being conducted on relevant components throughout. The exterior presents exceptionally well with gleaming paint and brightwork and no signs of corrosion whatsoever. The interior is a further delight, being beautifully trimmed in six full ‘Bridge of Wier – Bank of England’ hides and 5. 5 metres of ‘Conifer Green’ Wilton carpets. There is nothing to detract whatsoever, from the dash, door tops and headlining etc the whole car oozes a mellow patina commensurate to the quality of the original build and subsequent refurbishment. It is truly a delight.
In summary, this rare Cockshoot bodied pre-war motorcar presents exceptionally well throughout from the aforementioned most notable items, to that of the leather gaiters in-situ to preserve the suspension leaf-springs. It has been in long-term ownership and has enjoyed a superb level of care and maintenance. It has toured in 2008 to Brittany and would be ready and capable of doing so once more and/ or be polished and admired every Sunday with equal measure! Accompanying it in the history file is the original hard-bound maroon ‘Instruction Book’ assigned to chassis GRJ52. There are also a wealth of invoices from the likes of Ristes Motor Company, Vintage Supplies Ltd and T&G Auto Spares Ltd.
Priced realistically for today’s market at £39, 500. Any viewing or inspection is welcomed at Leavenhalls Classic & Prestige in Shropshire.
