SUMMARY
What an astonishing car this is, and although some say the W220 wasn’t the best S-Class, that in itself a very high bar, as any S-Class is invariably the best car in the world at its time…that’s the whole point of Mercedes’ flagship model. It’s not hard to see why though; this car is an engineering "Tour de Force" and would have cost a fortune when new. It’s probably one of the best cars I've ever driven in quite some time; every journey is an occasion, the ride is “magic carpet” smooth, and the cabin basks in near silence. Its impressively quick, in fact it will embarrass many so-called performance cars yet given its capabilities and size, it’s also surprisingly economical too; it also handles like a much smaller car, thanks to its clever suspension. I think the shape of the W220 has aged extremely well and is much less ostentatious than later incarnations of the S-Class, and its much more elegant than its forerunner, the W140.
I bought this car from an elderly gent who absolutely doted on it. It was a very reluctant sale due to failing health, which rendered him unable to drive it. It was kept in quite an impressive a dry garage, on carpet, with it only coming out in good weather. He was a member of both the Mercedes and Rolls-Royce owner’s clubs and had owned several Rolls and Bentleys over the years, and he told me this S500 was way better than any Rolls-Royce or Bentley he’d had. He’d bought the car in May 2019 from a Wedding and Special Events Chauffeur driven car hire business in Kent, where it had been in service for twelve years, doing mainly wedding and event duties; you can actually find lots of photos of it doing on the ‘web, doing its duty. There’s even a couple taken outside Buckingham Palace, where it had taken it’s clients to receive honours, I believe.
Because of the nature of its use, this car had to be very well maintained, and although sadly there’s no official service book, there’s a large file of paperwork documenting the regular maintenance schedule that was required. Not withstanding that, the condition of the car speaks volumes. I’ve just treated the car to a service, as well as attending a few minor jobs, so the car is ready to go to its new owner or it could even to go back into service; a car like this could certainly earn its keep! Finally, just to mention its also comes with a fairly valuable number plate (S1 RER) which could look like Sir ER I suppose, but not withstanding that it adds to the appeal of the vehicle.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
