PRINCIPAL FACTS
Two doors, a roof and many feet more than our usual stock, this 600 SEL might, rightfully, be considered the pinnacle of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class line. Conceived and engineered in a time of plenty, then launched into a worldwide recession, the W140 SL was a money-no-object exercise in Mercedes-Benz’s finest engineering, with incredible luxury and technology for the time, that still impresses today. Powered by a silky-smooth 6. 0-litre V12 with abundant power, that mated to a slick, quick automatic transmission and a chassis adept at exploiting all of that, the cabin has stadium-rivalling space, and lounge-like comfort. Front and rear heated seats, front and rear air conditioning, soft-closing doors, Bose Sound Package and a CD changer in the boot, when this heavyweight drove out Alan Day Mercedes-Benz showrooms in 1992 it lightened its then new owner’s bank balance by around £120, 000.
CONDITION SYNOPSIS:
Since 1992 it’s passed few a number of owners, largely from the same family, and its condition attests to the fact they’ve taken good care of it. There’s just shy of 69, 000 miles on its odometer, but there’s very little evidence of them, this car presenting very nicely indeed. The Almandine Red Metallic paint is a relatively unusual colour for the S-Class, it looking fantastic, there no dings along the expansive flanks of this lengthy saloon to detract from its condition. The interior has worn similarly well, though 32 years of use, and the cream leather, carpets and seatbelts do exhibit a bit of discolouration through use, that’s to be expected, though.
HISTORY FILE:
The most important booklet, the service one, is all present and correct, with a collection of supplying dealer stamps running up to 1999, where it’d covered 54, 974 miles, after which it’s been looked after by Mercedes-Benz specialists. As the odometer highlights, it’s been used sparingly since the late 1990s, and it’s clearly been looked after in that time, enjoyed on occasion and serviced, too. A previous owner had the car ceramic coated to help protect its fine paintwork, it a car that’s been enthusiast owned and cared for, and ready for its next owner to do the same.
SLSHOP SUMMARY:
Not our usual stock, admittedly, but this car presents in such good condition and represents an interesting era of Benz engineering that it was too good an opportunity to pass. These cars are beginning to be really appreciated among enthusiasts, and make for sumptuous, enjoyable transport and an interesting talking point at any classic car gathering. A useable, hugely capable saloon car, in superb condition with a wonderful V12 engine, you’ll struggle to find a better ratio of £s to lbs as a classic purchase, nor find one as nice as this example.
