SUMMARY
The W219 CLS is a stunning looking and timeless design (in my opinion) and one which I’m convinced will become a classic, if it isn’t already. I’d been looking for a CLS500 for quite some time to add to my offering, whilst at the same time getting chance to experience one for a while; I’ve had several W219’s but never one with a V8 hauling it along. On looking, it didn’t take too long to realise that most on offer are either very high mileage, abused, or in the high road tax bracket, or a combination thereof, and in the end I got tired of looking. Then, as is the way, this little gem actually came to me, and I just had to buy it; low mileage W219 CLS’s in general rarely come this nice, let alone the highly impressive V8 powered CLS500.
Originally supplied, and pre-registered by Mercedes-Benz of Bristol, this CLS500 has covered a mere 39K miles and had just three long term owners. It’s clearly been garaged and cherished by those owners, as this car really is something else, it’s absolutely stunning, its virtually flawless with barely a mark on the Iridium Silver bodywork. The interior is equally incredible; it still has that new look, feel (and smell) about it, I really doubt you'll find a better example.
This CLS500 features the brilliant and ultra reliable M113 V8, which is regarded as one of Mercedes' best engines of recent times, and doesn't suffer the the inherent problems of the later M273 V8, which can in some cases can destroy itself due to the use of substandard components (just Google M272/ M273 Balance shaft problems) Mechanically, as you’d expect at this mileage, its barely run in (as they say) and its got more power than you'll probably ever need. The 7G Gearbox changes seamlessly, and further maximises the engine's performance, whilst making cruising an incredibly relaxing experience; at 70mph the engine is essentially fast idling at just under 2000rpm. If you fancy a "proper" drive you change select the manual mode, and use the steering wheel buttons to make the most of all those horses!
The party piece really is the way it drives, and is what sets it apart from the usual diesel and smaller engine offerings; its just awesome, so much urgent power, but delivered so smoothly, its best described as an iron fist in a velvet glove, it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Its also not bad on fuel either, and 30+ mpg is easily achievable on a run IF you can resist not sampling 306BHP and near 500nm of torque from time to time. Also, thanks to the clever suspension system, at the press of a button, this fabulous car can be anything you want it to be, from a luxury cruiser to a purposeful sports saloon, that will handle like a much smaller car.
As a bonus, being registered in March 2005, its quite a “sweet spot” model in that it qualifies for cheaper road tax of £395 pa (as opposed to £675 for those registered after 2006) yet somewhat amusingly for a 5 Litre V8, with near super car performance, is also ULEZ and CAZ compliant too.
I could write an entire essay on this car, but suffice to say if you’re looking for one of these, you won’t find many better. Knowing how difficult to find one of these, I would happily keep this car myself, as it puts a massive smile on my face every time I drive it; its just mad yet sensible in equal measures, and still looks a million dollars!
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
