1958 AJS M18 500cc Big Single.

The bike is in overall very good condition, both wheels have good bright chrome.

The frame and tinware have at some time been powder coated to a bright serviceable finish with a nice shine.

The petrol tank looks to have been excluded from this and has a patinated finish which although not pristine is smart and presentable.

The saddle is in good order and piped in a subtle blue as per specification.

The exhaust system is clean and efficient with patinated chrome.

I have owned the bike for nearly eight years, during that time I have :

replaced the carburettor ( with a brand new identical Amal as factory spec.. have the box supplied by Hitchcock's of Redditch.)

Had the petrol tank lined with a vitreous enamel type coating by Tank Care Products of Norwich. The tank is still pristine inside.

Had the Smiths speedometer cleaned, refurbished and calibrated by Chronometric Instrument Services of Nottingham.

Fitted a genuine AJS rear carrier, added pannier rails then powder coated.

Panniers made by Moss Luggage of London ( The bike was made in Plumstead, London) so very in keeping.

Supplying dealer was S. J. Fair (Motors) Ltd, 201, Cheltenham Road, Bristol on Wednesday 12th March 1958.

The bike has the original registration number that was issued when sold new.

The frame and gearbox are original as left the factory.

The engine at some time in its long life has had the original M16 350cc replaced by the more powerful and torquier 500cc M18 unit .

The engine is correct for the year, 1958 being the year the dynamo and magneto were replaced by the more reliable alternator.. ignition is 12 volt coil with the standard auto advance/ retard points system.

V5 In my name and correctly registered as a 500cc.

Tax and MOT exempt.

The bike is an easy, reliable starter... hot or cold.

It runs very smoothly with no smoke, rattles or clonks.. in fact its very quiet for a big single.

Performance is lively with good acceleration and effortless cruising regardless of terrain.. solo or two up.

Both brakes are smooth and above average stopping power compared to other classics Ive ridden.

Reason for sale... advancing years suggest electric start a way to carry on riding for longer.
