PRINCIPAL FACTS:
Astral Silver Metallic over Blue vinyl and check fabric is a classic combo for the R107 SL and this car wears it well. Ordered new in 1986, this right-hand drive 300 SL has only covered 47, 687 miles since, and its fine overall condition is testament to that. The bodywork is all but flawless, and the interior shows very evidence of having been used, this car also coming with its hardtop. At 38 years old there’s some maintenance required to have it at its very best, with the suspension bushes past their best and the tyres should really be changed as they’re 10 years old now. Relatively easy, inexpensive fixes, which would raise this 300 SL from very good overall condition to excellent.
CONDITION SYNOPSIS:
A car that’s clearly been cherished, and garaged, with the Astral Silver Metallic paintwork presenting in excellent condition and the trim all bright and straight. It’s clean under the bonnet, too, while the alloy wheels are free of kerbing damage – though the date stamp on the tyres fitted to them suggest it’s time they were replaced. The interior looks like it’s barely been used, with the upholstery all in excellent condition, as is the dash and rear shelf – this 300 SL having been ordered without rear seats. The fabric folding roof does look a bit dull and creased, but that’s not surprising given it’s likely to have never been up and stowed for the life of this car.
Underneath it’s clean, though the suspension bushes are showing their age and could do with replacing, and while doing that we’d also have a look at the steering. Doing so would tighten this car up and allow it to drive as it would have done when it left the supplying dealer in 1986.
HISTORY FILE:
Lacking the sort of hefty sheaves of paperwork that some cars of this age have in their history files, the car’s condition underlines it’s been looked after. What history that comes with it is good, too, with the original service booklet full of stamps going back to the day it was delivered. They reveal that the car’s covered a scant 7, 000 miles in the past 27 years, as does the neat pile of MOTs that also feature in its box binder. There’s a manual for the Blaupunkt stereo that’s been fitted by a previous owner, it having DAB and Bluetooth, though looking a bit incongruous in this car’s otherwise period-correct interior.
SLSHOP SUMMARY:
A car that’s been looked after, in a desirable colour and trim combination it’s a little bit of work away from being near perfect. We’d change the tyres immediately, but otherwise the rest of the jobs we’d suggest on it – suspension bushes – could wait until it’s put away in Autumn. In the meantime, this 300 SL would be a fine cruiser now the summer has finally made an appearance.
