JNR 726D is a car we now know very well having supplied it to several of a regular customers. Not only is this an exceptional very low mileage 1960’s example, it is equally as impressive as a model. The Humber Sceptre MKII soon established a reputation as the most luxurious and superbly equipped car in its class. With a new powerful 5 bearing crankshaft, smoother, silent running 1725cc OHV engine and four speed with overdrive gearbox, the Sceptre II offered greater power, smoother running, improved all round performance. The model was described as a prestige car of quality, finely engineered, reliable and economical. Humber stated the model offered magnificent value at a modest price.
JNR 726D has covered little over 44, 000 miles from new and is an exceptional example that left the factory in Silver Grey Metallic with Red upholstery. The Humber covered just over 20, 000 miles in its early years but then spent many years in dry storage, resurfacing in 1984 and MOT tested at 21347 miles. Since then the Humber has been gently used, superbly maintained and has never required major restoration work. MOT certificates and maintenance receipts show the Sceptre has been very well maintained and preserved. The bodywork is quite simply exceptional with an outstanding underside that has never required welding work.
We have known this car since 2019 having being tasked by a long term regular customer to find him a top quality, largely original car. With so many suffering serious corrosion, there are not many high quality survivors, and when our customer, a Yorkshire based Barrister missed out on a far from perfect example in auction at over £16, 000, we went on a mission to find something special. We found JNR 726D and travelled all the way to Hampshire to view the car and buy it on behalf of our customer. We were tasked with the preparing the car, supplying and fitting a new set of tyres, fully servicing the Humber, MOT testing it, ensuring everything worked including all the gauges and radio, and then the Humber went into our trimshop for a high quality wool carpet set due to the extensive fading of the original set. On completion of the work, the Humber was collected and driven back to Harrogate and this owner then covered 1000 faultless miles, used on good weather weekends and the occasional commute to work.
After two years of enjoyable ownership, the Sceptre returned to us in lovely condition and we supplied it to a retired enthusiast on the East Coast who owned the car for around nine months. The Sceptre came back to us in part exchange for a sportscar, and then in January 2023 we sold the Humber to a customer in South Yorkshire who has covered an impressive 3000 miles. Ready for a change, the last owner drove the car over to us when viewing a beautiful 1980's Mercedes and agreed a deal to part exchange the car. When the 'new' car was ready, the Humber was once again faultessly driven over to us. The car really is fantastic to drive offering impressive performance, it feels light, nimble, offers surprisingly good acceleration and handles amazingly well. The 1725cc engine is incredibly fit, the four speed with overdrive gearbox smooth and the steering is just effortless. This quirky, very attractive car is ultra-reliable and having covered so few miles in its lifetime it still feels tight, sharp and fresh. Bodily outstanding with a gleaming Metallic Grey paint finish, JNR 726D looks stunning, the underside is first class and the interior still retaining its original, yet fantastic seats is luxurious, comfortable and very charming. This is a very special car, and comes with a comprehensive file of history that also includes an original owner's manual and Sceptre MKII sales brochure.
