The Bond Bug three-wheeler symbolises the fashionable youth culture of the early 1970s. The new decade continued the cultural revolution that began in the 'swinging sixties', and following their purchase of Bond Cars Ltd, Reliant focused their attention on breaking into the youth market with a new, trendy little three-wheeler.
They commissioned Tom Karen of Ogle Studios, who submitted his designs for a striking and futuristic ‘fun car'. The chosen design was a very aerodynamic wedge-shaped body, with an aircraft-style lifting canopy. Although it had a relatively short production run (1970–1974), the model has a very dedicated and enthusiastic following today. 2268 Bugs were produced - most of them in bright tangerine, but it seems that there are only around 200 roadworthy examples left. Our car is restored to a very high standard in its trademark bright Tangerine coachwork with all the correct decals. Several versions of the Bug were produced over its four-year lifespan. The first cars were known as the 700E, and were soon joined by the 700ES with a redesigned cylinder head and other modifications. With a higher compression ratio came an increase in power to 31bhp. 1972 models got a synchromesh gearbox and the manufacturer claimed a 72mph top speed and 42mpg petrol consumption. First registered on to a lady owner in East Barnet on April 10th, 1972, the Bug was sold to an owner in Dunstable in 1974 before going to owners in Henley-on-Thames. It spent many years in Wales, with owners in Colwyn Bay and Cemaes Bay on the Isle of Anglesey.
LLP 73K has clearly been restored to a very high standard and the large history file indicates a great deal of work carried out, particularly in 2016. The condition is quite simply first class and the Bond Bug is totally on the button and in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. It drives superbly and offers a unique, fun driving experience. A very rare opportunity to acquire one of the very best of these ultra-cool iconic little cars.
