Here we have for sale a 1988 Fully Restored Land Rover® 110 Station Wagon. Firstly, we must say that vehicles such as this rarely come to market, generally due to the fact that the cost of conducting a rebuild of this quality outweighs its market value – so people tend to rebuild them like this to keep forever, rather than to sell for a profit.

The restorer of this vehicle is a Land Rover® enthusiast and had known the vehicle for a very long time, it belonging to a friend of his. When his friend passed away, it was left to him and he undertook a full rebuild which included a new Marsland Galvanised Chassis, Galvanised Bulkhead, plus a host of other extras to bring the vehicle more in-line with modern expectations. The upgrades have been designed with both usability and longevity in mind – generally a 110 of this age would be extremely tired throughout due to the fact that chassis, cappings and bulkhead were not protected from the elements and so rusted quite badly. In carrying out this rebuild, all the vulnerable areas were future-proofed through galvanising with the hope that this vehicle will now last twice as long as it did first time around. We are therefore selling this vehicle with the hope of finding a home for it that wishes to keep it indefinitely. It would ideally suit a family, perhaps with multiple children, dogs, bikes and all the rest of it. With new coil springs and shocks along with power steering, the drive promises to be that of a much later defender – and with the addition of the Multimedia System, it should prove to be fantastic to use on a daily basis. Indeed, we have just endured our first frost of the year… Land Rovers® are not known for keeping their occupants warm, but even this has been considered within the build. A diesel pre-heater has been fitted for the very coldest of climates so that all occupants can be kept warm. There is a front heated screen too, in order to allow for year-round harsh conditions.

The interior has also been very nicely restored as the photos show. Generally, these trucks feel very tired and almost unusable, often with poor or missing trim pieces, but this truck looks and feels very factory fresh and ready for car seats, buggies and the rest of it. Another great feature is the fact that, in not too long, the vehicle will qualify for MOT and Tax Exemption meaning no annual trip to the MOT station or padding HMRC’s pockets to the tune of £400 a year for road fund. Couple to this the five speed gearbox and the fantastic 300TDI engine (which is only just run in at 110, 000 miles) and you have a vehicle which really is set up to last you a lifetime. When you think of it in the terms outlined above, all of a sudden this seems like a very cheap way to get yourself and your family around the planet for the remainder of your life.

As the photos show, there are a host of features that this full rebuild enjoys – it is a very extensive list and much will be not mentioned here (things like replacement brakes, suspension, repaired corrosion points on the tub, brake lines, etc etc). What can be seen of course are the wading snorkel (ideal for flood prone areas), the chequer plate wing tops (to allow family photos of children seated on the wings!), mud flaps, tinted privacy glass all round to aid cooling in the summer and a smart galvanised front bumper that won’t rust you like the outgoing mild steel, powder coated one. Whilst we remember this vehicle also enjoys a completely modern lighting set up with LED indicators and headlights too.

Out on the road, we find that 110 Land Rovers® sit a little smoother than their SWB 90 counterparts. The fantastic 300TDI (which enjoys silicon turbo hoses, a newly fitted timing belt and recent service) conveys this truck along just as it should. The five speed, reconditioned R380 Gearbox works seamlessly and affords motorway cruising at legal road speeds. The infotainment system is a welcome touch and makes those long journeys seem much shorter – with Bluetooth and a reversing camera that works when in reverse! The new suspension feels compliant and the power steering really does make this vehicle feel much newer than its year suggests. LED colour coded lights all round mean reliability and the best possible amount of light during these darker months. The deluxe linings to the interior aid in sound deadening, giving it the best possible feel for a truck of this age.

Obviously, this is still a 1988 Land Rover® – which means there are no computers, no OBD, no electric windows to fail, no central locking to fail, no ECU’s, no computer glitches – so it can be looked after and maintained with the most rudimentary of tools and hopefully on a shoe string budget, too.

In summary, if you are looking for a family Land Rover® as a worth lifelong friend, then this should cut the mustard. If you were to buy this vehicle and conduct a rebuild of this standard and specification, the costs could be up to double what this is currently for sale for. We do not expect this vehicle to be around very long and would recommend those interested to act swiftly as there is not another one in the pipeline to replace it, nor will there be. We believe this demonstrates fantastic value for money which has only been achieved through an enthusiast turning a blind eye to time and money spent to achieve this final product. We love it.
