Created as a more affordable touring alternative to the legendary 300 SL 'Gull Wing', the 190 SL still represents a perfect balance of elegance, sportiness and comfort. The prototype was presented at the New York Motor Show in 1954, where it immediately attracted great interest. The project, designated W121, aimed to create a sports roadster more suitable for everyday use than the more extreme 300 SL. The 190 SL was equipped with a 1, 897 cm³ inline-four engine, derived from the six-cylinder of the 300 SL but redesigned, delivering 105 hp. The car reached a top speed of around 170 km/ h, thanks to a four-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive. It shared some mechanical components with the Mercedes 'Ponton', but was distinguished by a revised stance and a sporty design.
