Originally conceived as a compromise between the comfort of a saloon and the robustness of the Land Rover Series, it was first produced as a two-door until 1981, when it was extended to a four-door. Its development began in the 1960s under the direction of Charles Spencer King, with the aim of creating a vehicle that would perform well both on and off the road. The prototype, dubbed the '100-inch Station Wagon', was inspired by the Ford Bronco and featured coil-sprung suspension - a first for an off-road vehicle. The engine chosen was a Buick-sourced aluminium V8, modified for off-road use, and the model featured permanent four-speed all-wheel drive with short range, hydraulic disc brakes on all four wheels, and a top speed of 160 kph. In 1987, the Range Rover was presented in the United States, 17 years after its launch, where it found a new audience, and in 1994, when the second generation was launched, it officially took the name Range Rover Classic. Its design was to have a lasting influence on Land Rover models until the early 2000s.
