First registered on 1st May 1978, this Volvo 244 DL, part of the renowned 200 Series introduced in August 1974, reflects Volvo’s legacy of durability, safety, and practicality. Finished in Shenandoah Green (paint code 123) with a Beige cloth interior, it was ordered with the B21 2127cc four-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. With the odometer showing 50, 727 miles, this example comes from long-term ownership, with just one keeper from new until May 2023, when it acquired its second owner, the neighbour of the first. Although running and driving beautifully, it is under our restoration project section for some minor recommissioning detailed below.
Mechanicals
The 2. 1L B21 engine starts and runs on the button, and power is delivered through the automatic transmission, which operates correctly. It runs very smoothly, and the choke is working correctly. It drives exceptionally well. The brakes and other systems are functional. A new radiator is visible, along with some other service items. The coolant is clean and correct. So is the oil. The chassis and underbody condition are rust-free and solid. The suspension components are showing surface rust but are functioning correctly on test drive. It had a clean MOT in 2020, and we see no reason, although MOT-exempt, why it wouldn’t pass another. The driver’s door latch is currently non-operational, so entry is only possible in the style of Luke Duke or via the passenger side. Original steel wheels are fitted with a matching set of Firestone tyres in great condition, albeit dated 2015.
Exterior
The Shenandoah Green paintwork (paint code 123) looks mostly original, and aside from some slight fading to the upper areas, it presents very nicely. The chrome trim and large safety-focused bumpers are present and in good condition. All exterior fittings appear intact and aligned, consistent with its original, un-restored state. All glass bears the original registration mark, including the windscreen. The pain points are the rust showing at the bottom of the wings/ arches. This is the panel only and not the structure. There is some minor bubbling starting, as photographed, on the bootlid seam. Aside from the rust photographed, which is cosmetic and not an MOT failure, it’s remarkably well presented and a testament to its lifelong lady owner.
Interior
The Beige cloth upholstery lines the cabin, with very light wear consistent with mileage and long-term ownership. The interior trim and carpets are present, and no damage to report. It looks very nice inside. No broken trims, cracks, or any damage whatsoever—again, remarkable.
History
A lovely history file with the original service book, owners’ booklets, and spare keys. A workshop manual. A mileage log and fuel receipts going back decades! It’s a very nice history set for a car in this price category, which are more often than not lost through ownership transition.
Conclusion
With just under 51, 000 miles, one former keeper from new until May 2023, when it was passed to the neighbour of the original deceased owner, this Shenandoah Green Volvo 244 DL offers a glimpse into the 200 Series’ enduring design. Original and un-restored. It runs and drives very nicely but requires recommissioning and cosmetic repair as stated. This MOT-exempt Volvo is ready for its next owner to either ‘use as is’ and enjoy its practical comfort and reliable heritage or go to a full restoration.
