Description
For sale my very presentable 1990 Volvo 740 2. 0L GL saloon.
Fitted with the mechanically durable and long lasting B200 series red-block engine. Remarkably corrosion free underneath with good straight rust free bodywork save for some age related marks. Runs and drives very nicely.
MOT until May 2027 with both advisories addressed
Automatic, manual tilt and slide sun roof, heated front seats (not tested or used), grey twill interior with complimentary blue carpets dash, and door cards all in excellent condition. No cracking to the dash board top. Original Volvo plastic mats front and rear. The spare wheel comes with original tools and jack.
The engine fires up first time and runs smoothly with no obvious rattles or noises. The automatic gear box operates and changes as it should.
Reluctant sale due to other projects and pressure on available garage space. Garaged at the moment.
I bought the car speculatively and indirectly from a deceased estate in May 2026.
The mileometer shows 126, 185 miles but doesn't appear to have worked since 2021. However the vehicle hadn't been used for 4 years prior to my purchase and I have only covered 809 miles in it over the summer attending car events and runs out. I doubt the total mileage exceeds 128, 000 but can't guarantee that.
Full mechanical & structural inspection carried out by my local garage following purchase. Underside found to be in remarkably corrosion free condition for its age with no obvious structural issues.
Recommissioning carried out (with supporting parts and labour invoices totalling £1, 701) including:
Replacement timing belt
Replacement front brake discs, pads & calipers (MOT advisory)
New rear exhaust back box
Replacement hand brake cables (MOT advisory)
Replacement engine oil, filter & full check over
Replacement light bulbs
Additional works include:
New front indicator and sidelight clusters
Wheel alignment, tracking and balancing
New reproduction wheel trims
Unfortunately no history or paperwork came with the car when I bought it. The V5 (in my name) shows 5 previous keepers several of whom are believed to have been from the same family (father and sons).
The car appears to have been well cared for judging by the relatively corrosion free underside and straight and tidy rust free body work save for a few age related marks etc. The windscreen, rear window and sunroof seals are all sound with no signs of rust in the usual places suggesting the car has been kept undercover or garaged for much of its life.
Further details:
The speedometer only springs in to life once the car has been run for a few miles
There is no radio code or aerial. It is understood Volvo can still supply the radio code
The drivers side door mirror bracket needs painting and the glass refixing
The horn works but makes only a faint sound
Three of the bumper corners are scuffed
The rear n/ s rear wheel arch has been caught - I have rust proofed and touch in
The rear headlining has sagged slightly
The drivers seat belt requires a new spring. Still works - I have replaced the push button.
The AA Badge is not included
Original supplying dealer number plate on the rear
Overall a very presentable, unmolested and honest Volvo 740 which is ready to be enjoyed. Totally reliable during my ownership. Not quick but a very relaxed and comfortable driving experience. Simple mechanics and Volvo's thoughtful design make this an easy to work on classic which attracts plenty of attention.
Please take a good look at all of the photos. Happy to answer and queries. Thank you for looking.
