Ford Escort Mk2 1. 3 1978
2-owner car (3-owners including me) that has been in the same village from new, solid and unmolested.
The previous owner purchased it around 23 years ago from the original owner that was 80 years old at the time. In the last 23 years the previous owner has only driven the car in the summer months, the only work that he has carried out in his ownership is basic servicing. So not been welded, painted or anything like that in over 23 years.
He told me that the original owner had it repainted due to some minor accident damage caused by one of the wheels coming off, he did not have any other specific information other than that.
I have since looked it over with a paint thickness measuring tool and it is clear that the damage was caused to the driver’s side front wing, this has a much higher reading than the rest of the car.
From what I can see it still looks to be still original paint on the roof, bonnet and boot, seems to have been painted from the bottom window lines downwards. All internal arears are still original paint.
It has great panel gaps all around.
Interior is not bad for its age apart from the seats, they would need recovering.
In the engine bay it looks like a battery has exploded at some stage, this has affected the paint surface under the battery tray, arear under the bonnet and a few other arears. It looks like rust, but it is only surface scabbing and is solid.
The boot mat has obviously not been removed in many years and was stuck to the floor, some of the carpet got stuck to the floor. Original “Metallic Green” colour sticker is still attached. Spare wheel-well looks to have had a repair.
Underneath and chassis are solid and in original condition, I could only see one small weld repair. I lifted the floor mats up as best as possible to check the floor, it still has the original soundproofing attached which is a good sign.
It drives and was used this summer prior to me purchasing it. I have noticed that the exhaust is blowing and that the clutch is not the best, there could also be some other minor defects that I am not aware of.
