This Jeep was purchased in running order by the current owner in 2019 as an ideal specimen
for complete re-manufacturing to top show standard for VE75 celebrations in 2020.
The body tub was removed from the chassis, completely stripped and shot-blasted in order
to reveal any problems. Only 3 panel sections needed complete replacements and these
were sourced from renowned specialists Dallas Autos who proved to be a very
knowledgeable and supportive partner throughout the intensive 12 month re-build .
The top hat sections under the floor were also replaced with new sections and the whole
structure treated with rust preventative primer before the usual matt olive top coat.
The chassis frame and all running gear were also required to be of show standard in every
detail as will be seen from the attached image. To achieve this it was stripped to metal and
proved to be virtually rust free. It was then rust-proofed with the POR treatment layers
before applying the olive green. All inside surfaces and cavities were then painstakingly
treated with Bilt Hamber rust-proofing wax.
The brakes and suspension were completely overhauled with all new operating components
fitted including springs, shackles, dampers and U bolts. The handbrake and clutch operating
mechanisms were treated to new parts and adjusted to work correctly
The front suspension pivots received new seals and felts and all ball joints were replaced to
complement the re-furbished steering box.
The front has the increasingly rare free-wheel hubs and these were cleaned and treated to
ensure perfect operation. The wheel bearings, brake shoes, pivots, pipes and master
cylinder were all replaced to ensure safe and smooth operation.
The differentials were dismantled to the smallest component and pressure cleaned but
these robust and over-engineered items needed few replacement parts so were carefully re-
assembled with new seals and re-meshed.
With with the chassis and bodywork outlined above in our own 10 vehicle workshops and
being re-engineered by Chris from Car Developments the engine and gearboxes were
receiving expert attention from a well-known Jeep specialist in Derbyshire High Peak. He
worked closely with our regular machine shop, Rotherham Engine Services, on the re-bore,
crank grind and valve seats and guides. New pistons, white metal bearings, valves, springs
and oil pump were fitted at this time and the engine and drive train should be good for
many years to come. The petrol filter unit, oil filter and air filters are all refurbished and
replaced as Is the petrol pump and all associated piping. The petrol tank was treated to a full
overhaul and the lower side drainer tanks replaced with new,
All body handles, chains, catches, hinges, seals and glass were completely removed and
individually refurbished with nothing left to chance. This is very labour-intensive and time-
consuming work if properly done.
The original combat wheels were dismantled, rust protected and re-assembled with new
authentic style bolts, tapes, inner tubes, valves and tyres.
The tub was given a complete new electrical harness, switches, instruments and lighting
units and the 6 volt dynamo refurbished and a new starter motor fitted. This was
complemented by a classic style battery. However the owner wanted 100% reliable on the
button starting for military parades, short journeys and showgrounds so it was decided to
remove and retain in store the 6 volt components and replace with a 12v alternator system
from a Jeep specialist. The leaking repro batter was also replaced with a modern sealed
alternative.
These changes have resulted in 100% reliable starting and running but the original
components are included in the sale as are any replaced original instruments and new
spares. All original F stamped bolts were rescued where possible and new stamped
alternatives used where safety is paramount. Hundreds of removed bolts and other small
components are in the large spares package
This GPW was treated to a new hood, interior, straps and hip cushions but the original hair
cushions and hood were retained and are also included in the sale. Further a full new winter
kit with hinged door side-screens was fitted and can be used or removed in a short time
The rare and valuable Howitzer front bumper bracket (replaced with quality repro normal
bumper) is also include in the sales price which is pitched for an early sale.
Finally the body and chassis numbers were supplied to a Jeep identity and markings
specialist in the Netherlands who supplied correct new identity plates and body marking
transfers which were carefully positioned and applied using flat white spray paint.
Any inspection and trial welcomed so the prospective buyers may fully understand the
features and specification. The work described above was completed without regard to cost
and it will be rare to find a Jeep that has received so much conscientious specialist attention,
