Description

1970 Dodge Challenger 440 R/ T — “Vanishing Point” Specification
Factory-correct car | Believed one-of-one colour/ trim/ stripe combo | UK registered | Museum provenance
What is it?
The 1970 Dodge Challenger 440 R/ T is the ultimate statement of Mopar muscle: big-block power, commanding presence and timeless late-’60s attitude. This example is especially significant — a factory-correct “Vanishing Point” specification car, finished in White with Green interior and the distinctive Dark Metallic Green transverse “V9F” stripe.

According to its original fender tag and build sheet, it’s believed to be one-of-one in this exact colour and trim combination. Imported to the UK after spending more than 20 years in a private U. S. museum collection, the car combines authenticity, rarity and exceptional presentation. Now UK registered, it’s ready to show, drive and admire as one of the most distinctive R/ Ts in existence.
What’s it got?
Under the long sculpted bonnet sits Chrysler’s legendary 440-cubic-inch Magnum V8 — the heart of the R/ T (“Road/ Track”) package — delivering effortless torque and that unmistakable big-block soundtrack.

Factory-correct highlights include:
- 440 cu in (7. 2-litre) Magnum V8
- Three-speed Torqueflite automatic transmission
- Dual-snorkel air cleaner and four-barrel carburettor
- Power steering and power brakes
- “V9F” Dark Metallic Green painted transverse body stripe
- White exterior with Green interior trim
- Rallye wheels and correct brightwork
- Original fender tag and build sheet present

Every key detail matches its tag and build sheet; finishes and components remain true to factory specification.
How does it drive?
The 440 Magnum defines the Challenger’s character: immense low-end thrust and a long, effortless surge that begins just off idle and doesn’t fade. In period testing, well-sorted 440 R/ Ts were genuine straight-line performers, covering the quarter-mile in the low-14-second range at over 100 mph. On the road today, that same torque delivers instant overtakes and relaxed high-speed cruising.

The 110-inch wheelbase and wide track give the car impressive stability. Turn-in brings a measured dose of understeer which can be balanced neatly with the throttle; smooth inputs are rewarded with balance and confidence. Fitted with modern radial tyres and correct suspension geometry, this car feels poised yet unmistakably authentic — more grand-touring brawn than nervous sports car.

Steering uses the period recirculating-ball system, light yet communicative on the move, and geared for sweeping A-roads. Ride quality is firm by design, thanks to torsion-bar front and leaf-spring rear suspension, but at motorway pace it settles into an effortless rhythm. Cars equipped with the optional front discs — as this one is — inspire genuine braking confidence, while the soundtrack of the 440’s idle rumble turning into full-bore thunder remains utterly intoxicating.

The result is a charismatic, torque-rich grand tourer: smooth, brutally quick in the mid-range, and endlessly engaging. Driven with finesse, it flows; asked for drama, it responds with pure Mopar theatre.
Why this one?
Because it’s not just another Challenger — it’s a museum-grade, factory-correct, one-of-one 440 R/ T finished in the rare White/ Green/ V9F combination.

In 2017, the current owner embarked on a full recommissioning programme with renowned Mopar specialist Ernie Wright, addressing every key mechanical and service item to ensure the car performs exactly as intended. The work included a complete engine service, carburettor overhaul and tune-up, suspension and brake rebuild, gearbox service, differential overhaul, replacement metal fuel lines, heater box and matrix restoration, comprehensive suspension setup, and a full electrical check.

As part of the recommissioning, the car was also fitted with new BF Goodrich Radial T/ A Raised White Letter tyres, providing the correct period look and improved road manners while maintaining originality.

To make the car more usable in modern traffic, subtle and reversible upgrades were added, including LED dashboard lighting, H4 headlamps, and a period-correct Bluetooth radio with hands-free calling and hidden USB/ Aux ports neatly mounted inside the glovebox.

Since completion, the car has been driven regularly, covering over 50 miles most weekends, weather permitting, keeping all systems exercised and in excellent running order. Although the Challenger qualifies as a Historic Vehicle — meaning it is exempt from road tax and MOT requirements — the owner insists on maintaining a current, valid MOT, demonstrating the car’s mechanical integrity and commitment to proper upkeep.
